I have an idea for a human martial artist character. I specifically write “martial artist”, not “monk”, because this character isn’t seeking enlightenment or a higher consciousness. He just wants to become a stronger hand-to-hand combatant, specializing in martial arts, so I’ve just been re-flavoring the Monk class to fit the character design. I have re-flavored the Monk’s Ki Points as Stamina Points, as this character doesn’t control ki, but has great martial prowess and stamina. However, when I look at the Ki-Empowered Strike feature, I can’t come up with a way to re-flavor this feature while keeping it mechanically the same. Does anyone here have a way of explaining how a martial artist, specifically one that doesn’t use any mystical or magical techniques, would punch a ghost or an air elemental and be fully effective in doing so? (This character wouldn’t be going above 7th or 8th level, so I don’t need to worry about the REALLY mystical stuff like Tongue of Sun and Moon.)
I dont see why a character can't use No without seeking enlightenment.......
It’s not so much that he can’t use ki because he’s not seeking enlightenment, but more that he wasn’t taught by monks, so he doesn’t have any training with ki manipulation (or anything else for that matter, besides martial arts), so he just can’t use ki. He has to compensate by becoming faster and stronger, raising his physical limits to be equally as strong as a real monk.
Your “Fighting Spirit” idea sounds pretty good! It’s like he’s putting so much power behind his blows, reality shifts ever so slightly, disrupting even the incorporeal. I might just use that one!

I dont see why a character can't use ki without seeking enlightenment, but I will do my best to help anyway.
Fighting spirit: punch ghosts through shear willpower.
Aura armament: same principle as ki, use your body's energy to increase its effectiveness against the non-physical.
