Yes I know you are all thinking: A monk with a familiar?
Well, our party just had a double PC death. Our wizard/rogue and our sorclock. I wanted to play a sun soul monk so I went with that, but I remembered that we won't have access to a lot of the spells that were really nice utility spells we had before.
So I decided to take the ritual caster feat. I realized our wizard left behind his book, and so if I took rc (wizard) I'd have access to his ritual spells already. One of which includes find familiar. And of course I'm gonna get myself a familiar.
So, I know owl is arguably the mechanically superior familiar, but not everything is mechanics. What familiar do you think would be a good fit for a human variant, criminal background, sun soul monk?
Monkeys have been trained to do crime like pickpockets, unlock doors for burglars, be look outs, carry money/ drugs. look at the monkey in the hangover 2. they also have ties to martial arts, Wu Kong the monkey king from china, drunken monkey or monkey style kung fu.
But ignore all that and name your monkey Ee. so he/she can be "The Monk Ee". also it's a sound monkeys make.
Alright, DM has given his approval to flying monkey. Now, Celestial or Fey? Celestial makes sense for a Sun Soul monk, but Fey makes more sense for a Flying Monkey
I can see both to be honest, Celestial implies a sort of "higher power" from the upper planes. Fey on the other hand is a bit less otherworldly and would be closer to natural magic at work.

As he is a Sun Soul Monk I think Celestial would work better... Also I was wondering you have would have any access to Touch Spells to take advantage of the Flying Monkies' 'Pack Tactics'... hmm or is it Nimble they get? (different stat blocks in different places)

I
its old, but it may still help you. A dude compiled all the stats of all the families into a list and does breakdowns:
Also, don't forget that your familiar's form isn't permanent. You can cast the spell to change his form, so if you need your familiar to swim or be tiny or pass for something else, you can change his form for a while.

A monkey.
Yes!
Monkey puns aside.

Well, Tomb of Annhilation has a stat block for a tiny beast with a CR of 0 called "Flying Monkey"... so an argument definitely could be made for them.

Flying Monkies get pack tactics. I won't get any touch spells. I'll be a ritual caster via the ritual caster feat for utility outside of combat.
