We've just reached lvl. 3 in the campaign I am currently playing. I'm playing an aasimar paladin but in his lore and background, he's a high elf celestial warlock. (He is a paladin not a warlock)
Veran was once a Mercenary that travelled the land looking for a job. He had decent magical(high elf cantrip) and decent fighting skills (high elf's prof. in longswords etc.). One day he was hired by a merchant to kill a monster. He killed the monster and tired he returned to the town the merchant lived with the monster's head. The merchant was happy the monster had been killed, but the merchant hired thugs to kill Veran. The thugs threw Veran in a river that led to huge waterfalls. Veran managed to hold himself from a rock but he couldn't keep doing it for a long of time. HE shouted for help but noone could listen to him. He did the last thing he would ever do. He asked help from the gods. (he was an atheist and he didn't really think something would happen but it did). And Veran made a pact with the angel for his life.
He isn't sure if he should have made a pact or died because he doesn't like following the angel's orders and since the merchant betrayed him he never trusts anyone.
I went protector aasimar for the flight at level 3 and paladin for the melee fighting.
So which oath do u tink would be the best for his background?
The character serves angels, Oath of Devotion is easiest. The character's just grumpy about it. Oath is about the nature of the virtues conferring the power, not necessarily the PC's attitude toward them, other than the requisite loyalty. Dutiful servant, just not happy about it. I want to say particularly in urban fantasy there are stories of supernatural empowered beings doing the work of higher powers with great efficacy, though really don't like their job.
While the backstory is neat, it doesn't really tell us anything about what the angel might be asking Veran to do in return for saving him; as MidnightPlat says Devotion is suitable regardless, but another oath might fit as well.
For example, celestials like devils can sometimes make deals with ironic twists; it could compel him to seek out and punish traitors like the merchant, in which case Oath of Vengeance might suit (the target being anyone traitorous, so an oath you can never fulfil), it might be recruiting him into a larger war against evil in which case Conquest could fit and so-on.
With the exception of Oathbreaker (which is specifically intended for a Paladin on a path towards becoming a Death Knight), all of the paladin oaths can be spun to fit both good and evil alignments, and in some cases both chaotic and lawful. Since you've chosen Paladin for mechanical reasons (despite canonically being a warlock) you can try to work backwards from the oath you want, and how it can be justified by either the angel or Veran themselves; if you can't think of a good link, then look at another until one feels like it fits?
Former D&D Beyond Customer of six years: With the axing of piecemeal purchasing, lack of meaningful development, and toxic moderation the site isn't worth paying for anymore. I remain a free user only until my groups are done migrating from DDB, and if necessary D&D, after which I'm done. There are better systems owned by better companies out there.
I have unsubscribed from all topics and will not reply to messages. My homebrew is now 100% unsupported.
The backstory seems well thoughtout, to clear things up you are mechanically a Paladin that made a pact with an Angel.
Given what you have offered, Redemption seems to make the most sense to me. You are redeeming your previous disbelieving life. Ancients might work too, especially since you are an Elf and even moreso of the Celestial that saved you was Elven/Fey type. You will need some help from the DM in terms of storyline here.
Thank u all for the feedback. After reading all ur comments, I am between Conquest and Vengeance. I don't think devotion is as fitting as Conquest and Vengeance but I will talk to my DM for any further help.
