I have been invited to a campaign. I'm going to play a Centaur Paladin and I need help choosing a subclass. The other players are a human wizard and a silver dragon born rogue. I'm planning to fill the roll of healer/tank. I'm also gonna be the escape ride ie. One rides me and the other rides my steed. Please give suggestions.
Go with Devotion. The abilities are always useful and once you get permanent Protection from Good and Evil, you're golden. In my latest character, I went with Oath of the Ancients, and I love Misty Step, but the rest is useless. It has been over a year real time since I have had to make a save versus a spell and that is the Ancient's big calling card, so the whole subclass is a wash for me, whereas PfGE affects most combats.
For that party composition, you’ll really end up being the tank. The rogue and wizard should cover damage well enough, you’ll need to be the one soaking up damage. And really any paladin can do solid damage with their smites, and will have the AC and hp to be a good tank. So I’d say find an oath that looks like it will be fun.
Or consider a melee cleric like forge, war or tempest. They’ll be a more effective healer, will tank well, and can still output some solid damage.
Also, I’d say bandari’s experience with ancients is not necessarily universal, but is very campaign dependent. You might ask your DM about the kind of campaign they are running, and what kinds of enemies you might expect to face. Any hints or advice they give you might help you decide.
