I am thinking of an idea for a Paladin-Warmage. The idea is a character with good durability and extremely good saves.
She will start Paladin with S16 D10 C10 I13 W8 CH17
Then take 2 levels of warmage, then Paladin the rest of the way.
Then pick up 2nd chance at 6th level (P4/W2) and probably a Charisma ASI at 10th.
At 8th level as a reaction she should have a +8 to saves she makes and +9 at 10th level and rerolls 1s, which will make it closer to +11 for some of them (or +4 and +5 if she already used a reaction). AC should be good with heavy armor, a shield, shield of faith along with reactions for second chance the first round she is hit and the War Magic reaction for another +2 after that.
As far as wizard spells I am struggling. I will be able to prepare 3. I know I want false life since she has a 10 constitution. Absorb Elements and Shield seem obvious, but as a Sword and board I won't normally have a hand free for the somatic component, also anything with a save is not great with a 13 casting stat. Maybe featherfall and magic missile?
I have not played a Paladin in a long time, what would be a good subclass and spells for the Paladin to prepare?
I had a halfling ancients paladin. It was really fun getting misty step as a domain spell and being able to bring my mount with me. Probably there’s better reason to pick other oaths, I just wanted to throw that out there. Though that does really help with the slower move speed halflings have. Also, being a mage who’s resistant to spell damage is also pretty cool thematically.
FWIW, I went dex-based. We made it to level 13, and all I ever had was +1 studded leather and a +1 short sword and a regular shield, but it was still tanking and laying down big smite damage. It helped that there was a life cleric in the party to keep me alive, but still, it was quite effective.
As far as spells to prepare, there’s find steed, and nothing else will matter much because your slots will just go to smiting.
