Hi, I have a level 5 oath of conquest tiefling paladin with 17 STR, 16 CON and max charisma as well as 13 DEX, 11 INT and 13 WIS. I am in a campaign in which we will eventually reach level 20 and my intention was to make a tank character. The DM gave me an item that will in the future allow me to increase one abillity score by 2 and in this campaign, a few feats can be attained by means other than leveling up. I was just wondering if, long term, it would be better to use my level ups to increase an ability score or take a feat such as shield master, sentinel or tough.
So like all questions like this it really comes to your playing style. Do you want to be the front line tank giving your group bonuses to their saving throws?
If the answer is yes then you have to decide at what levels you want these to happen. Do you want to cast spells that require save DCs on enemies or use the spells for smites?
If you want the save DCs then the higher CHA helps that along with giving your allies (10 feet at low levels and 30 feet at level 18) bonuses to saving throws.
As Paladins do not get the number of feats/ASIs as Fighters it is hard to get everything you mention along with the 22 CHA needed for +6 to saving throws/spell save DCs.
If you are going Plate + Shield then shield master will be great especially once you reach the level of AOE spells/effects coming at you.
If you plan on having a steed or at higher levels greater steed then mounted combatant is fantastic.
If you want some ranged capabilities then a two level dip in Warlock will give you Eldritch Blast along with an additional property (pushing/pulling enemies is fun).
With all those odd numbers, you might look at some half-feats. Like slasher if you use a sword, or crusher with a hammer, to round out str. Or fey touched to round up wis and get a misty step per day.
I do have find speed and mounted combatant already as the mount is very helpful in controlling the battlefield. As my Charisma is already maxed out, the bônus from aura of protection is at the highest it could be. I've just been struggling to choose between shield master, tough or an inscrease to my constitution for the next ASI. I will also get the sentinel feat by other means. Would the buffs from shield master really be more useful than having more HP?

I have thought about crusher too, but the party isn't struggling much with damage, survivability is more of a problem since we just have 2 rogues and a very squish wizard.

Well, then crusher, allowing you to (no save or check) move someone away from your squishy allies sounds like a great fit.
Or sentinel, to force them to attack you. I hesitate to say heavy armor master, but it’s there, too. It will also give you a point of str. And with little healing, the dr will help you. The issue is the damage reduction won’t help you for much longer, as more and more enemies will have magic weapons.

Yeah, heavy armor Master would be good at the moment but long term it wouldn't be very useful. I will make some experiments with crusher though. Thanks

Ah then you are higher level already.
I can tell you that at those levels the save for no damage from Shield Master is fantastic. The bonus action shove is less useful typically that those levels due to enemies being huge or bigger.

Wouldn't most saves at that level target more than myself alone though?

If you are subjected to an effect that allows you to make a Dexterity saving throw to take only half damage, you can use your reaction to take no damage if you succeed on the saving throw, interposing your shield between yourself and the source of the effect.
This is the third benefit from this feat. Save for nothing if you are in the area of effect.
