Sorry if the title sounds clickbaity I just didn’t know what to put so thats what it is. So Im making a character and a big part of their character is that they used to be a super powerful fiend worshipping warlock, but they saw the error in their ways after something that isn’t important. Now they are an oath of the watchers Paladin and one of the tenets is kinda contradictory to their personality, the “never consort with fiends or those who worship them” mumbo jumbo. He is playing into the “tragic hero that was an antagonist in season 1” archetype a la Zuko if you couldn’t tell and the “dont consort with fiends” wouldn’t make sense so would you, as dms/party members let them “replace” that specific part of the oath with the oath of redemption’s “everything has good inside if you look deep enough” schtick. Thanks for your feedback and may the dice roll ever in your favor.

I don't see any contradiction. In fact, it seems to fit perfectly. They used to consort with fiends, but now they realized its bad, so they don't anymore and the pendulum has swung to the other side. No one is as righteous as a convert. Paladin oaths aren't about having followed them your whole life, they are about what you are going to do from now on.
