Could swear I saw a thread like this but can't find it.
Starting campaign at level 6 with custom lineage oath of vengeance paladin. Going back and forth on taking sentinel or polearm master first. Eventually I plan on both feats (we'll be going to level 20). Is there any advantage to taking one of them before the other?
Personally, I’d go PAM first. It gives you a reliable use for your bonus action, and it depends only on your choice to use it, and also your reaction as enemies get close to you. Sentinel depends entirely on enemy decisions to either run from you or attack an ally, and can often leave you with your bonus action unused.
If you're starting a campaign at 6, and you're doing so as a custom lineage, you can choose both sentinel and PAM to start. Remember, custom lineage starts with a feat, and at 4th level you can choose another feat.
Thanks- appreciate the feedback. I did go with PAM from beginning. And to your point, cgarciao, I did consider sentinel as well but I went with the ASI at 4th level (had two stats that were odd numbered). Thanks again
PAM first is generally the right choice. I would recommend playing the PAM build for a while before deciding if you need sentinel at all. You only get one reaction so PAM might be enough.
With my vHuman Vengeance Paladin I prefered Polearm Master at level 1 and Sentinel at level 4. Getting the bonus action attack early on is better i think, and the variant way to make Opportunity Attack is a nice addition. It later synergyse well with the Relentless Avenger feature too.
Polearm Master is better earlier on, although pairing them turns you into a killing machine. Polearm is what you should get first though, because being able to smack them if they get in your range is actually insane.
