I am playing a Paladin for the first time, and really enjoying it so far. I just turned level 3 and am trying to figure out which 2024 subclass to pick. Here's the details:
Future Use - Likely to stop around level 10. So advantages at later levels are less interesting to me.
Race/Background - Dragonborn, with the solider background and this is a strong focus of his character (military, formation, controlling, etc).
Fighting Style at 2 - Interception
Weapons - Uses a polearm primarily (re-flavored Pike for push control), but also a greataxe for up close work (and cleave). So, two handed focus either way.
Party/Role - Party has two strikers already (Monk/melee rogue), a full cleric, a druid, and a wizard. So this is probably more focused on an (off)tank role
I'm not sure what subclass best fits this situation. I favor things that adhere to the character concept (grizzled old military veteran) in general, since I'd rather have an interesting character than an optimal build.
The first question is are you using 14 or 24 subclasses.
But either way, the next question is which one seems like the most fun to you? Paladins are a strong class no matter which one you pick, so read them over and see what looks interesting and best fits what you want your character to do.
I did read them over, and am having trouble with paralysis of choice. They all have some interesting, some not interesting elements. Nothing stands out as the obvious choice other than the Ancients is probably too much overlap with our druid, and not really in character. Was hoping for some insights here that would help me choose.
If he's a grizzled old military man dragonborn, then what made him start on the path of the paladin? Is he trying to make up for cowardice in the past by being brave and making sure everyone knows it (Glory)? Has he changed allegiance because the military he used to be a part of was undisciplined, unscrupulous, and abusing their power and now he can truly stand up for what's right (Devotion), or, perhaps, take the fight back to his previous employers and show them as much mercy as they showed the weak they conquered (Vengeance)?
What if..... I chose the Devotion path... and when I become lvl 16 or so, I stubbornly go, ( alone or not ), to the Ethereal Plane just because I innerly think it may rest there the old forgotten deities that could grant me to be more Defensive or, at least, be the most responsible Paladin to be binded by 2 Deities AT THE SAME TIME ??
Can it be possible ??? Can the first Deity not punish/expel me and allow me do this crazy stubborn idea ??? Can I be binded 2 deities and also gain their buffs ??
Heh, I literally wrote a stupidly long backstory about this. Essentially he lost a challenge for leadership, was cast out in to die in the wastes, at the moment of his death a deity (Bahamut, so dragon theme) intervened for reasons, and sent him to a new land to be his harbinger and seek a noble sacrifice. He was how've NP direct guidance and good paladin powers are awakening (as he levels), as he more fully emodies his new role. There's more to it, but that's the gist.

2024, sorry!

What a dilemma, huh ???

Sounds like Devotion to me.
Agreed.
Devotion is strong in 2024 and a solid choice. I have had fun with Vengeance.
