I just wondered if some of you more experienced folk could take a look and let me know what you think of him?
I'm planning on taking Oath of the Ancients at level 3 because I think it fits well with his backstory and his long-term goals as both a Paladin and a Tortle.
I've written a backstory for him as well. The world the DM has created is set hundreds of years after civilisation was forced to move under the surface because of the scorching heat of the sun.
On the shores of a vast underground lake, lit by phosphorescent lichen hanging from a thousand stalactites, Sunny was born. There he learned to crawl, learned to walk and learned to survive. His parents, nearing the end of their stories, pasted a lifetimes knowledge to Sunny through tales, songs and poems. It was from them Sunny learned about The Fleeing and about the sun. How he wished he could see the sun. He longed for the world to go back to the way it was in the stories his parents told him. Maybe there was a way.
After his parents passed, Sunny roamed the caverns and tunnels that connected them. Tortles have a natural aptitude for navigation, and it wasn’t long before Sunny knew the surrounding area by heart. He learned to create traps and weapons, and to fish using spears. He didn’t have much contact with other creatures during those early years. It wasn’t till he was older that he ventured further afield and started to explore the higher levels that he came into contact with the city.
Gleamingdark was strange to Sunny, who had known a solitary life. Before then he’d only had contact with a few other Tortles and had made friends with some of the dwarfs who ventured to the deep caverns in search of riches. However, he found a home at the Temple of Light.
Remembering his childhood dream of restoring the surface to the way it once was in the stories, he became a worshipper of the god of light. It was here that he read of how the Fleeing was caused by the light gods anger at the wickedness of the surface dwellers.
This set Sunny on a path of justice and righteousness, to cure the world of its wrongs, and to hopefully restore the light gods favour, which would allow his people to return to the surface.
He had ventured to the surface once, but all he found was a desolation and nightmarish monsters. He quickly fled back to the city, and continued his service at the temple, studying the sacred texts. It is here that Sunny started his journey to become a paladin. A holy warrior, sent on a righteous cause to restore the world of the ancients, of his ancestors. He hoped he would one day be worthy to take his Oath, and lead all those who are oppressed beneath the earth back to the surface.
I like your backstory and he seems like a fun character to play! Oath of the Ancients's flavor has always appealed to me (it's not too intense or broody) and the abilities/spells are great assets in combat. Are you looking for opinions on combat or the character himself? I am interested in how you want to play your character in combat. I noticed a war hammer but no shield. Are you going for two-handed weapons? What fighting style are you thinking of taking?
Opinions on both combat and character are most welcome.
I'm thinking of taking Great Weapon Fighting at level 2, so yeah, two-handed weapons. He's going to be smashing stuff with his incredibly high strength roll + divine smite. For defence, I'll cast shield of faith I think. I can also lay on hands myself if health starts dropping low!
Ok, good to know! Since it's your first character, I wasn't sure if you had a preference. A tortle won't benefit from the defense fighting style (since you likely won't be wearing armor) so any other style can work for your character. If you're planning on using two-handed weapons, I might suggest taking a greatsword instead of a war hammer as your starting martial weapon as it does more damage (2d6, vs 1d10). I would also suggest you not rely on Lay on Hands to keep up health too much---I've found that it's more helpful to hold onto a point or two to bring a dying teammate back to consciousness (and back into battle with 1HP).
With a solid backstory, you have so much RP potential which, if you ask me, if the best part of D&D. Really, the only next step is to play your character and see what you like and don't like. I know that my first character, also an ancients paladin, changed a bit after the first few sessions as we started to mesh as a party. And that's okay. No matter what you do, your party will definitely adore you by the time you have your level 7 ability, haha.
Okay, that's a great tip, thank you! I've swapped out his warhammer for a greatsword. I might take Cure Wounds when I get access to spell casting to help bolster the groups healing potential. The party consists of a Light Cleric, Sorcerer, Rogue and me, so no dedicated healing from anyone.
I'm very much looking forward to RPing this character. I've been trying to think how he would respond to the situation he finds himself in at the start of the campaign and what his attitude towards the other party members and society might be.

Hi all!
I'm about to start my first campaign as a player and have chosen to play as a Tortle Paladin called Sunny.
Here's a link to his character sheet: https://ddb.ac/characters/4813966/q1ZUdR

Thanks for getting back to me :)
