Eeeking out some ranged melee ideas for our Pallies. Blessed Warrior gives us Toll The Dead, Sacred Flame, etc.
I know that not having a ton of ranged attack options keeps this class "balanced" but I'm here to explore the javelin.
A melee weapon with the thrown property. Can smites, holy water or alchemist's fire be successfully added to a 2lb javelin?? 16oz of fluid is only half it's weight.
Divine Smite and other "smite" spells require the use of a melee weapon or an unarmed strike. Javelins are melee weapons, and even when you're making a ranged attack with them, they're still melee weapons. Therefore, they work with spells that require melee weapons, even when you're throwing them.
There aren't any official rules about adding things like Holy Water or Alchemist's Fire to weapons, regardless of what type of weapon it is. These items are intended to be thrown on their own, like grenades, rather than being attached to a thrown weapon. That's the kind of thing you'd want to talk to your DM about allowing as a house rule.
I just want to say, personally, I’d never allow tying something to javelin like that. In the example given by the OP, you’re talking about adding 50% of the item’s weight to, presumably, the tip of the javelin. It would completely unbalance the thing.
I mean, I get rule of cool vs. physics, and usually I go with cool, but there’s limits.

Thanks in advance!

All of them if you're creative enough
Agree with wagnarokkr on the points.
