Im playing ToA with some of my friends, in the first session we were unlucky on the random encounters and I died, my character in the second session faced the same fate. So I need to make a third character.
I really want to go a paladin/X multi-class but I’m not sure which would be better. Any opinions on which I should choose, with justification, would be great. When to take levels would also be super appreciated.
Also, in my party there is a death cleric, a monk and a bard. We are going to level 11 and at the moment we are at level 2.
Call me biased but I really like Sorcadin. The most frequent build is Paladin 6/Sorcerer X. The level 6 Aura of Protection is well worth the wait...and it also buffs your allies within 10 feet of you. Waiting until level 6 takes some patience but it’s worth it!
I will also vote for Sorcadin. The exact build depends upon your weapon of choice.
A two-hander will want Paladin 6/Sorcerer 14 with Oath of Devotion and Shadow Sorcerer. You will use Darkness + Devil's Sight, casting Darkness using your Sorcery Points, to get free advantage. Alternatively, against high HP/low AC enemies you could cast Haste for additional attacks. Like any other two-hander Paladin build, you want Great Weapon Master and Elven Accuracy with Channel Divinity - Sacred Weapon, so Half Elf is the optimal race. This is the high damage option, you want to maximise your Str and use your spells for buffs. Things like Quickened Spell Mirror Image helps avoid attacks without taking up your concentration. Resilient: Con is your final ASI.
A sword'n'board will want Paladin 2/Sorcerer 18 with either Draconic Sorcerer or Divine Soul. The first build is a dedicated defender, they will want to combine War Caster with Divine Smite Booming Blade to threaten melee enemies with should they try to get to your allies instead of you. They will also want to focus on their spellcasting to control large areas of the battlefield and/or groups of enemies should the need arise. If you can convince your DM to let you take a homebrew thunder dragon ancestor then take Draconic, the extra HP and Cha to Booming Blade damage are great. If not, Divine Soul is the obvious choice for Healing Word and Spirit Guardians.
