Hello, I'm a new player and I'm looking into creating an oathbreaker or conquest paladin. I really like the abilities that cause creatures to take damage upon hitting me like armor of agathys for conquer and the dreadlord aura damag, as such I would like to lean toward this with my charachter. I'm planning on using a dragonborn and I have been really stuck on initial gear atm. I was thinking of using a glaive with PAM and sentinel plus heavy armor master. Would this be good with a paladin or do they heavily rely on a bonus action for spells? If the glaive is a good idea should i go duelist or great weapon fighting style? If the glaive is not a good idea would a greatsword be better or am I just best with a sword and shield? Any help would be apreciated.
Duelist only works if you holding 1 weapon in 1 hand so it doesnt work with your 2 handed glaive/greatsword. Paladin both good in sword and board or 2 handed weapon just take the appropiate fighting style with it one give you more offense other more defense. Most spell that are BA depended are smite spell or buffing spell and there effects require you to maintain concentration so the PAM BA attack can come in very handy. I would keep a glaive and greatsword at hand. The glaive and sentinel handy to keep melee fighter 10 feet away from you while switching to greatsword to prevent ranged enemies moving away 5 feet of you keep the close ranged attack disadvanage against you.
Awesome, thank you! In that case I think I'll start with a greatsword and shield on my back (so i don't have to buy one later) then buy a simple weapon and a glaive later and try them all out before i invest in feats and will go with defense for the +1 AC
As Palfatreos mentioned, paladin smite spells use your bonus action. And if you're going Oath of Conquest, you'll want to use Wrathful Smite a lot after obtaining the level 7 Aura of Conquest ability. Also, Oath of Conquest paladins are pretty greedy for Ability Score Increases (CHA and either DEX or STR), so you might not have much room for feats.
Would you say wrathful smite would be a necesity every turn? If I'm not mistaken smite takes a spell slot and you can burn multiple slots to up its power so its great for when you score a critical hit, then at a much later level the paladin gets smite on each attack, right? If thats the case I see it being great as a situational boost. Speaking of which is this smite an action or bonus action? Does PAM require the use of a bonus action for all of it's effects to occur each turn or would some still apply regardless of the use of a BA or not? Also, does wrathful smite replace smite or is it something you can use instead of smite?
Smite and Wrathful Smite are different. Warthful Smite takes a spell slot and bonus action, smite take a spell slot and no action. They can stack. I would just use smite though, as you get more damage (2d8) per spell slot, and wrathful smite only does 1d6.
The point of Wrathful Smite is not damage but excellent crowd control. If Wrathful Smite hits, the creatures cannot move, attacks at disadvantage, and makes its check to escape being frightened at disadvantage! And you don't have to keep concentrating afterwards.

Haven’t used this account in forever. Still a big fan of crawling claws.
