I have read a couple forums on reddit about key differences with the water genasi and the tritons and which some would prefer over the other. I have seen a lot of triton paladin character concepts through multiple forums but did not see much for water genasi. Flavor wise they can both be great for their own reasons, but would water genasi be a poor race for paladins?
Just thinking of the use of holy water after reaching 3rd level (create water + blessing it, than adding to this supply regularly) would be awesome alone, but would there be any other benefits besides +1 wisdom racial trait?
Water Genasi is okay but not great for Paladins. Out of all the Genasi, it's the weakest stat wise. The Con is still nice and the Wis boost is okay. Fort he roleplay of blessed holy water that's quite cool and fun.
But Triton is just better stat wise for a Paladin. +1 in all your main stats for a Str build Pally is nothing to sniff at + spells and resistance to Cold is great.
I don't know if I agree with water genasi being weakest stat wise, +1 wis is great for most classes especially with the racial traits they also provide (swim speed, amphibious etc) but I get that they might not be the best for the paladin class.
I am leaning heavily towards triton, but RP is half the fun so we will see.
From a purely mechanical standpoint, Tritons definitely have the edge over Water Genasi. Story-wise though, it all depends on the world you're playing in and the history you want to create for your character. My take is that Tritons would have an established society and history in most worlds, while Genasi are more likely to be on their own, or maybe part of a small community. But that's the beauty of D&D, if you want your world and its inhabitants to be different from the traditional, go for it :)
Water Genasi are a better choice for Ranger b/c Rangers use WIS as their spellcasting stat. They have generally less useful spell abilities compared to the Triton as well. However, I think you should pick whichever one better suits your backstory.
Mechanically Triton gives you a +1 to stats that would be sought after as a paladin - strength, con and charisma. Plus they get racial spells that use charisma - which you’ll need for your paladin spells.
I have a Triton Ancients Pally8/Draconic sorc 1 that I loving, just like the triton race more overall than the genasai. They are from another plane and all, sure genasai have a parent that was but...
