When your paladin turns level 3 and picks their oath subclass, do y'all ever actually have them recite a scripted oath? If so, what are some of the oaths that you gave them use? I've heard of people using the Viking Prayer from 13th Warrior before as a paladin oath for a devotion oath. Anyways, let me know. I'm particularly looking for inspiration for a crown oath kind of pledge of allegiance "my life for my liege" type deal.
I kind of did on meeting Strahd in a CoS campaign, but not quite as confidently as I would have liked! Wasn't scripted so much as a particular set of promises
Our groups DM made Strahd give a big speech about how Barovia was his domain to play with, condescending welcome, and so on. The Paladins Oath was more or less a response to that, To see him Deposed, to see his damage undone, his legacy thrown down, the people of Barovia freed from his grasp, the shadows removed from his valley, and preferably his head removed from his shoulders. Pretty standard stuff, but it was my first character after a LMoP premade =p
I really like this idea. When I play a Paladin (at some point) I will definitely write up something for my character. In the meantime, I will watch a lot of magical girl and samurai anime and see if I can come up with anything.
Well, the last (and first) time I had a paladin hit Level 3, I decided on the spot to make up an oath, so I just went over the listed tenets for the specific Oath, e.g. "I pledge myself to compassion: to aid others, protect the weak, and punish those who threaten them," and wrapped up with something like "In the name of Yondalla [my goddess] I pledge this, from this day until my last day." It made a nice formula.
Of course, every paladin's oath will be different: for a paladin of vengeance who has just seen his village burned by orcs, it might be more "I swear to whatever's out there listening, I'll hunt down those hell-fiends and all their kind, and I won't stop until I'm dead or they are!"
Oh, and for anyone looking for oath inspiration, I'd suggest a look at the Night's Watch oath from Game of Thrones!
Related to this.... If a paladin's powers come from the strength of his oath.... How does he get spells before reaching level 3? The origin of paladin's magic left me a bit puzzled in this edition, although I grasp its intended concept.
Anyway, I try to roleplay my subclasses whenever I get them, doing at least something "symbolic". My glamour bard had a short monologue before the session in which she thought about her past and her future and decided to embrace her glamorous persona..... Buying a very colorful and theatrical dress :)
Talking about paladins, I imagine them walking the path of their oath before level 3, but ideally it would be fantastic roleplaying the oath or a symbolic "ceremony", once reached level 3.
I kind of took it as you've studied your deity and their ways by 1, the fruits of your training show up at 2, and the level 3 oath is deciding what to do with it.

Do you remember what they were?

There is no oath more badass than the Green Lantern Corps oath. This is scientific fact. ;)
I do love it
