I have recently gotten back into 5e and have just purchased MToF and was excited to see Shadar-Kai make it into the world of playable characters. I was originally intending on playing a Rogue or Warlock as this race however, my choices have been limited for not wanting to double up on classes with my fellow adventurers. Ive been in a few campaigns in my past so I did not want to impede our newer players from feeling original. So, in doing some thinking I’ve decided to try out a Dexterity based Paladin of the Raven Queen. We will be starting out at first level in Waterdeep. I’ve decided to make my Paladin a sneaky boi with a Criminal/Spy background but I’ve hit a stagnation on creative flair for this character, I am certainly excited to play him however I would like to draw upon the boundless creativity of the interweb to find some bardic inspiration. I have contemplated using a whip with the character due to using a rapier being so unoriginal in dex based builds but the lame 1d4 damage is quite disheartening. There are no home brew elements to this campaign so I beg for your thoughts on how to make my character flavorful and unique.
Thank you

What sources are available to you? The double scimitar from the eberron book might be a good option. it's /slightly/ overpowered imo, but not game breakingly so, and requires a feat for finesse.
if that's not an option, is re-skinning on the table? if yes, two scimitars or shortswords, fluffed into a dual sword or scimitar. Both weapons are finesse; so you could use your dex. Mechanically, you'd be dual wielding; mainhand does D6+dex mod, bonus action to offhand for D6 (paladin doesn't qualify for DW style) Since it's technically two weapons, you wouldn't qualify for great weapon fighting either, so you gain no mechanical advantages by fluffing it to a single, dual weapon. That might be a cool, flavorful option for someone from the shadowfell.
If /that's/ not an option, your best bet is straight DW with scimitars or shortswords. The whip's not the end of the world should you choose to go that route, because you can still smite through it...at reach. You'll be able to make that whip hurt badly when you expend resources.

Any time an unfathomably powerful entity sweeps in and offers godlike rewards in return for just a few teensy favors, it’s a scam. Unless it’s me. I’d never lie to you, reader dearest.
I have all of the Player Character books that I’m aware of; PhB, SCAG, XGtE, VGtM, MToF. I’m looking to go into the Dueling Fighting Style for the bonus damage so I was hoping to go the more one handed and shield route. I could possibly convince the DM to reskin a rapier. I might go the route of whip and just bear the shame of 1d4 for the opportunity of having wicked smites later on.
I’m hoping to RP the character with the lore presented in MToF and if my DM allows draw on the previous editions lore of the Shadow Curse and the Shadar Kai’s soul trying to remove itself from its body while they are away from the Shadowfell so they must do adrenaline junky style things in order to keep their soul intact. I feel like they way they are presented in MToF gives them way too much doom and gloom to RP interestingly, the conflict of their dark lineage and their flamboyant lifestyle gives way to an interesting character.
