Creating an Aasimar paladin that is not necessarily fallen or an oathbreaker but definitely has been broken and is on the run. More of a desperation to survive motivation. Backstory is she was sent by her angelic guide along with her brother to protect a kingdom but the army along with her wards were slaughtered by Graz'zt and his demon horde. She was tortured and her loved ones were tortured and killed in front of her for Graz'zt's pleasure. Her brother sacrificed himself to give her a chance to flee. In the chaos she gets away but is haunted by the demon and the nightmares of her own memories. She only seeks to distance herself as far as possible to survive. She has no idea if she is being followed or not so she just runs. Any good options for oath until she can seek vengeance and redemption?
Would it be more effective to just choose spells I feel she needs at lvl3 and piece together oath options from already defined oaths and just run with it? New to 5e and trying not to break the character but want to really portray the fear and desperation until she can be redeemed and fight her way back to challenge the demon.
honestly.that backstory makes sound like you would go for vengeance but the characters motivations don't sound like thats appropriate. Stop thinking about actions. think about emotions.
How does the character feel about the angel who sent her brother and her to their deaths and capture? What does the character want. What does the character need. What does the character THINK they need. Whats stopping those things from being achieved? are they actual limitations? or is the character stopping themselves? What are they willing to do to or not willing to do in order to achieve these goals?
Feels abandoned by her guide as she has had no communication since the battle. Doesn't blame her guide as Graz'zt had everyone fooled and basically came out of nowhere. He is re-establishing his place on this plane and this kingdom happened to be the unlucky spot for his return. There's a bigger backstory that adds to the despair and isolation. Brother is actually still alive and is now a paladin-warlock(antipaladin) for Graz'zt.
Thinking of adding in a couple of ranger levels to add to the survival theme. Dont care as much about the optimization for classes as I do the character development.
You could easily make a reasonable choice of any one of the Oaths.
I would imagine Vengeance to destroy the demon threat.
Redemption to bring her brother back in to the "light".
If your faith in you deity was shaken enough to align yourself to other forces, you might choose:
Conquest and pursue glory in your own name.
Crown to put your trust in the leadership of fellow mortals.
Ancients for their closer ties to nature and mortals compared to celestials(not necessarily true, perspective based on your paladin's personal experiences ).
Finally, Oathbreaker as you have seen true power and want to be "on the winning side".
Sounds like Ancients to me. That's the kind of Oath you take in forgotten temples in overgrown valleys while you're on the run from things. Plus there's an anti-fiend option in your channel divinity and the aura against magic at 7th level sound like strong abilities for going up against the demons and warlocks.
How does your character know that her brother has gone over to the enemy's side? I ask b/c whether she knows and how she founds out could affect the personality and motivations of such a character.

I've got some of those answered.

Appreciate the help by the way.

Yah, after you elaborated on the brother bit. Redemption could be a good choice.
