I have a concept for a character that I need some help with. They're a Warforged Paladin that through damage has forgotten what god they serve, all they know is that when she prays some thing answers, and by the time she unlocks her Oath she finds out it's not a conventional god but some Great Old One.
She's gentle but strong, caring but a bit unhinged, and good ol' Chaotic Good.
How would you make this work? Which Oath would fit best? Unfortunately the DM has forbade homebrew.
Ancients? I mean "great old" and "ancient" are very similar phrases.
But seriously, the magic resistance aura, the ensnaring channel (tentacles/tendrils instead of vines?), the final transformation, and just generally "different" spells all could be great old one compatible with some rewording.
I know the standard flavor is the ancient fey oaths of ages past but the ancient oaths could be sworn before GOO altars just as easily.
Paladin Oaths are not inherently tied to a deity. Each Oath follows a set of ideals instead, which are listed at the beginning of each subclass option. The two decisions here are: 1)Which of the Great Old Ones specifically does she serve and 2) is your character more of a paladin that fights for her ideals or a cleric that follows what she feels her deity desires?
In regards to the former, depending on which Old One is in question, you could slightly adapt the rules of the Oath of Conquest or the Oath of Devotion. While those who take the Oath of devotion USUALLY are said to associate with light or angels and those with the Oath of Conquest often side with the Nine Hells these are entirely flavor and not at all restrictions. You Character could fit thematically with either of these oaths as long as you discuss it with your DM.
With the latter in mind, characters who are driven by a deity tend to be clerics. If your deity is a defining character trait, I would suggest looking into the Cleric class, perhaps the Forge Domain. There are the Channel Divinity creatures, as well as the ability to wear Heavy armor (like a paladin) and the ability to create essentially +1 weapons and armor from first level. I don't mean to influence your backstory or development, but perhaps that could fit with the Great Old One's mysterious nature; your character can strangely enhance gear simply by touching it (albeit after a rest).
Hope this helps

The best oath for this concept would be warlock (with pact of blade).
Paladin oaths don't specify certain patrons, but rather certain ideals. Ancient space squid is not an ideal, so it has no bearing on paladin oath.
