My DM has put forward a situation for my Paladin that is going.to seriously affect his future. I wanted to present this situation to all of you to get some feedback on what other people would do in such a situation.
My paladin was based on a Warhammer Astartes, being from an Imperium that worshiped a god emporer. His home was burned to the ground by one of the other paladins in his squad. He was exiled for failing to stop him but his general told him to find this heretic and bring him back. Upon finding the heretic he used a Greater Restoration spell and cured my paladin of a Modify Memory spell. With his memory clear he now sees that this paladin was innocent of that crime and that the one who actually destroyed his home was a general of the empire who stated "by the will of the Emporer" as he slaughtered the other paladins, leaving only my character and this other paladin.
Given that I really only see a few options ahead. I can have this character leave the campaign to go with the other paladin, I could refuse to believe my memories and continue hunting him, I could become an oathbreaker and vow to destroy the Emporer or renounce my oath and pursue a different path (by taking a different class).
If they're ok with you playing Oathbreaker, I see no reason not to go with it if you're into that class. I for one really enjoy the subversive good/neutral death knight thing, so.
Alternatively, you could double down on your chosen path and devote your self to the emperor even after realizing the truth. Might bite you in the butt, but it might also get you some big ups.

It's ok Ranger, you'll always be cool to me.. Unless druid gets another use for its wild shape charges.
I'm a little fuzzy on exactly how this imperium/emperor business works so this might not be applicable but there are other options.
1. If your paladin has faith in the emperor you could vow to hunt down the general who is "falsely invoking the emperor" to commit crimes against the empire. Even if he was actually following orders, you could still believe your devotion is true.
2. If your paladin has faith in the imperium you could vow to hunt down the emperor who is committing crimes against the imperium and ensure that the imperium has a true and just ruler.
3. If your paladin has faith in the guiding and founding principles of the imperium, you can still be the same paragon of those principles even without the imperium or emperor, becoming a free paladin but still keeping your oath.

What would you all do in this situation?

This is an opportunity for a very interesting story.
I would definitely go for it. You may side with the other paladin now, or kill him and go back to the imperium, then defect after a while.
You don't necessarily go Oathbreaker, as a vengeance oath would also work.
It is a good time to consider multi classing, you may look for the help of another entity (warlock) or look for other ways.
