I'm new to playing the game and am looking for advice on which dice to purchase. I know about the basic 7pc sets but which extras should I look to acquire.
The 7pc set should be everything you need if you're okay with rolling the same die multiple times. A second 7pc set is always nice so you have a set to "banish" for bad rolls...and a lot of common rolls require a second die. But, the following extra dice might be useful.
More D6. Many things are expressed in a number of D6, including greatsword damage at 2d6 and many attack spells that go even higher.
More D8. Paladin smites are in D8 so whenever you smite you probably want to grab "smite dice" to roll with your weapon die (which might be a D8 already).
A second D20. Advantage and disadvantage both require two D20. They should come up often enough to just have two D20 on hand.
All that being said, you might want to just invest in a bunch of dice. Many dice companies offer a "pound of dice" that'll give you the start of an instant collection.

2d20 for advantage/disadvantage and extra d8s for smiting are the basics, yeah. Depending on your particular build other dice might be useful. Sword & board builds use d8 for damage, but it's a different damage type than the smites, so one d8 that's a different color would be a good idea there. If you're using a great sword you don't need a different colored d8, but do want 2d6. If you're an elf or half elf taking elven accuracy you'll want a third d20 for that triple advantage.
Basically, plan out a character build, stat it out to level 10 or so, and see what abilities you'll have, then get dice to match that, being sure to account for crits. Then get some extra, since you never know what might come up during the campaign. Maybe you meant to use a longsword, but your dm dropped a flaming mace, and now suddently you need a couple extra d6, different colored since one of those d6 is fire damage.
