Casting Time: 1 minute Range: Touch Components: V, S, M (30 feet of cord or rope, which is consumed by the spell) Duration: Until dispelled or triggered
While you cast this spell, you use the cord or rope to create a circle with a 5-foot radius on a flat surface within your reach. When you finish casting, the cord or rope disappears to become a magical trap.
The trap is nearly invisible and requires a successful Intelligence (Investigation) check against your spell save DC to be found.
The trap triggers when a Small creature or larger moves into the area protected by the spell. The triggering creature must succeed on a Dexterity saving throw or fall prone and be hoisted into the air until it hangs upside down 3 feet above the protected surface, where it is restrained.
The restrained creature can make a Dexterity saving throw with disadvantage at the end of each of its turns and ends the restrained effect on a success. Alternatively, another creature that can reach the restrained creature can use an action to make an Intelligence (Arcana) check against your spell save DC. On a success, the restrained effect also ends.
The only prerequisite to cast this spell is a rope like object and a 5 foot square flat surface. So during down time, you could "craft" traps (ie spend all you spells) with flattened 5 foot squares pieces of cloth that you could instantly deploy whenever you want to trap places. Plus, it is permanent! Is it legal?
Also, if you have other creative ideas for this spells, I'm curious to learn more of them!
How would you pick it up // deploy it without triggering it?
Touching it would put you into its protected Area and it makes no mention of you being immune to it or having any control of when it can go off.
Mechanically it species to move inside it the area and only a small creature or larger can trigger it. So by this rulings, I think you could literally manipulate it like normal piece of cloth as long as you dont walk on it you would be fine. Otherwise, you could manipulate it with smith pincer or tools like that or even mage hand.
So this spell fails on any nonflat-ish terrain, huh ??? Then the only option here to make that surface as flat as possible, just casting some Mold Earth, or Move Earth if you don't mind spending a 6th lvl slot on it.
The trap triggers when a Small, Medium, or Large creature moves onto the ground or the floor in the spell’s radius. That creature must succeed on a Dexterity saving throw or be magically hoisted into the air, leaving it hanging upside down 3 feet above the ground or the floor. The creature is restrained there until the spell ends.
I can't see a DM allowing you to 'precast' this spell and then carry around your activated magic traps, ready to use. The spell has a 1-minute casting time, during which you make and lay out the trap. When the casting time is over, the trap is set. You can't pick it up and move it. "When you finish casting, the rope disappears and the circle becomes a magic trap." The rope isn't there any more -- the spell consumes the rope.
Also, yes, that's the UA version of the wording above. The printed version of the spell specifies the duration is 8 hours (it also ends if the restrained creature frees itself, it's a one-creature trap), specifies rope, but only says 'ground or floor.' It also specifies Small, Medium or Large, as imalius says.
Set it up. spike growth between the snare and yourself. maybe entagle the difference and pelt with stuff from affar. Or use it to capture someone you don't want to kill for a change. Either way, restraining them and in terms of a group initiative and maybe actually setting a trap. (I mean, a home alone reference is easily done if you hole up in a place) Then you are fairly set. Makes for a retreat option too. Or that if you do play from afar, you got some line of defense if you get rushed.
just pick it up with a crowbar or something, and bring it into your space. it specifys when a creature enters its space. but if it enters others space and procs, that would break it seeing as how you could just throw them on people. also what if you made it but never sat it down on the ground. like it always stayed in your space.
As a DM I would not allow this usage of the spell. The cloth doesn’t suffice for the flat surface, to pick it up after setting you would set it off and, for me, the written version supersedes the UA. The problem with snare is the time needed to cast - it is effectively a non combat spell. I would use it on approaches to camps, traps set for ambushes etc.

I think the cloth would still be visible, but I guess by RAW you could do this.
I doubt my DM would let me get away with it, so check with yours first!

The cloth can still be camouflaged by your survival check to blend in the scene.

My Ready-to-rock&roll chars:

I just realized there is no Size restriction for huge or gargantuan sizes. I always preferred stacking cordon of arrows. I may have to rethink this.
Is this the official version of the spell? Or is this one the UA version?
