I'm rolling a gloom stalker and trying to optimize my build. I get to start at 5th-level and might go variant human, so that I'll get two feats. So far, the plan is to use sharpshooter and crossbow expert as it seems those are the go-to feats for the subclass. I'd like to use a longbow as my primary weapon just as a flavor preference for my character, but that seems to run counter to having crossbow expert.
Trying to figure out the bonus action attack here. Is it possible to attack with the longbow and then use my bonus action to attack with the crossbow? I'm a bit confused on how that might work.
cross bow expert is restrictive. You need a free hand still for the ammunition property. Also long bow is not a one handed weapon. Crossbow expert is still useful but not necessary. I mostly take it to remove disadvantage for using a longbow in melee but you could own both weapons and switch out as needed.
Crossbow Expert
You ignore the loading property of crossbows with which you are proficient. (note: ammunition not removed)
Being within 5 feet of a hostile creature doesn’t impose disadvantage on your ranged attack rolls.
When you use the Attack action and attack with a one-handed weapon, you can use a bonus action to attack with a hand crossbow you are holding.
Not really, Crossbow Expert states that you trigger the bonus action extra attack if you attack with a one-handed weapon. Longbow is two-handed weapon.
Do you want to be a skill monkey? Start out as a Rogue with Crossbow Expert then take 4 levels of Ranger for Archery fighting style and Sharpshooter. If you really want to cheese the system, don't pick Nature and Survival until you can take a third level of Rogue and pick the Scout Subclass.

To our deaths then!

Both of these answers are...on target...😀
If you're going for Longbow, I'd look at the Piercer feat instead of Crossbow Expert. It's a solid half feat and works with Rapiers as well.
I also prefer getting the +2 in dex at lvl 4. I'm assuming your group is going with a typical point buy/standard array system.
