For any players or DMs out there still unwilling or unaware of how to incorporate a PHP ranger into a campaign both thematically and mechanically (using the natural explorer and favored enemy class abilities) I want to point you towards chapter 1 of Van Richten's Guide to Ravenloft.
The content in that chapter gives designer insight, player and DM permission, and clear direction, purpose, and reason on how to do that very thing. Characters SHOULD fit into the world they exist in. It makes more sense for a character to have thematic and mechanical ties to their world than it does for the player to have zero information about it beforehand. Tritons live in oceans and around coasts. Goliaths live in cold and mountainous regions. Drow live in the Underdark. A PHB ranger would have terrain and creature choice(s) appropriate for at LEAST their starting environments.
Whether you are pro or con the natural explorer and favored enemy abilities, please read chapter 1 of Van Richten's Guide to Ravenloft.
