Try playing 5e without "knowing" any of the rules and you will see how useful recalling information is.
I seem to "recall" wotc saying revised ranger was not part of 5e.
I also recall a that stasticically trolls and gost accounts have low number of posts.
In all seriousness, recalling creature immunities, attacks, movement speeds has a direct effect on combat. (example: how fast can a player move vs an ooze) That information alone can give the party a huge advanage but there is so much more simple "recalled information" can do.
Somewhere back in this or another ranger thread I think I asked what spells folks thought the hunter and OG Beastmaster should have as bonus spells. Sadly I can’t find it now so since such lists would be improvements to the ranger let me ask again 😁 please post your ideas for the lists :
Games/tables that allow meta knowledge, feature almost only combat, and are bound by “RAW is Law” aren’t going to find or have ways to use and appreciate things like rangers, knowledge clerics, illusion magic, tools, and other such things that aren’t simply and easily quantifiable. These aren’t faults of these things.
It sounds like wizards is moving away from situational stuff and so PHB ranger will probably get to Grant them selves advantage on int checks a certain # of times (for favored enemy) and grant themselves Double PROF a certain number of times (for favored terrain).

Technically “recalling” info is tantamount to being able to look it up in the monster manual or an online resource. And that can be huge.
Wisea$$ DM and Player since 1979.
The only issue I have with recalling information on monsters is it really doesn't matter most of the time.
Rarely have I seen it affect my personal games and I have barely seen it affect any real play podcasts.
Even Beau in CR who could get info for free barely used it.
