Looking to multiclass my lvl 3 Melee Monster Slayer ,currently thinking of taking 2 levels of fighter for the extra fighting style and action surge now and 3 levels of totem barb (Next session we level up to lvl 8)
In the long run I'm hoping to get the ranger to lvl 15 as I really like the idea of the Slayer's Counter and I'm just trying out ideas on what to do for the other 5 levels and I wanted to know if anyone had any advice or had similar builds and could offer their experiences?
Not sure what you mean by 'other 5 levels' because if you want 15 levels of ranger, and have 2 levels of fighter and 3 levels of barb, you're already at 20 levels.
I would highly recommend getting to extra attack in Ranger before multiclassing if you are jumping from 3 to 8. Being level 8 without extra attack would be maddening. I did one level with a ranger/cleric before 5th and that last level was hell without it.
Based on your goals, I would recommend going to 5 ra/2 fi/1 ba if that is really where you want to go. Personally I find the Ranger uses a lot of concentration so it doesn't play as nice with barbarian since you can't concentrate on a spell while raging. But the flavor works well.
5th level Ranger also gets you up to 2nd level spells which are nice.
I agree with Elfdope. Get to level 5 with the ranger. You won’t regret it. Level 2 spells, extra attack, both awesome. Nothing a level or two in any class will overshadow getting extra attack for a martial character.
Just catching up, what do you want out of the 5 levels in fighter and barbarian that the missing 5 levels of ranger won’t give you? I sort of get action surge but that is 2 levels of fighter, the extra fighting style could come from the fighting initiate feat as easily.

I'm thinking of taking the "other 5 levels" as the 2 fighter/3 barb, hope that clears things up
