I am a Dex/Wis heavy ranger and im wondering which should i get first? Piercer bcos alot of my general weapons and early spells do piercing damage, but high archery sounds great!
I will be using alot of archery at the beggining, but i have 2 piercing melee and alot of planned piercing spells
Sharpshooter: long range attacks dont have disadvantage
Ranged attacks ignore 1/2 and 3/4 cover
you can use -5 attack to add +10 damage
Piercer: Increase your Strength or Dexterity by 1, to a maximum of 20.
Once per turn, when you hit a creature with an attack that deals piercing damage, you can re-roll one of the attack’s damage dice, and you must use the new roll.
When you score a critical hit that deals piercing damage to a creature, you can roll one additional damage die when determining the extra piercing damage the target takes.
I am going to assume you have an odd dexterity. If you do, then Piercer gives you all the feats abilities plus +1 AC, +1 to hit, +1 to initiative, +1 to dex skills/saves. With an odd dexterity piercer may not get you more damage than sharpshooter, but the other improvements may be more useful and balance the equation. When you consider additional damage that you may have from your subclass and hunter's mark it may be more costly to take the gamble of sharpshooter from 4th to 8th level. Due to prof bonus scaling, the math for Sharpshooter works a lot better 9th level and above with an 18 dex than it does at 4th level.
If I had an odd dexterity I would strongly consider piercer at 4, and sharpshooter at 8. (other dex based feats I would consider: Elven accuracy-for elves, Squat Nimbleness-for smalls, Skill expert).
The biggest advantage that sharpshooter will give you isn't the long range, but rather being able to ignore cover. Being able to hit anything that isn't in full cover with no disadvantage is pretty useful. As for the -5 to attack roll, it's kind of situational in that you only want to use it when you're fairly certain you're going to hit - either you're buffed (e.g. bless), or you you already have advantage.
Piercer is pretty analogous to GWM for melee - it's not bad, but for as a flat out mechanical comparison - being able to land hits more often (with Sharpshooter) is the better option.
