I'm a level 14 Gloomstalker ranger. I looked at the rest of the leveling up for this class and I'm not real fond of the remaining benefits. I joined the campaign at level 11, and the DM made my character because this is an amnesia campaign, which is why I haven't considered multiclassing before.
Our DM is hoping to get us to level 20, so I would take 6 levels in whatever I multiclass in.
I know a lot of people would suggest rogue, but we already have an excellent rogue in our party, so I don't know how much that would benefit the group.
I'm thinking arcane archer or cleric, but I really don't know yet. What would you suggest?
Generally I would suggest Battlemaster for 3-4 levels but if you took it to 6 for two more ASI's it would make sense. 4 BM +2 cleric (pick your favorite) is a good route as well.
Defense fighting style Action Surge A bunch of maneuvers (Precision shot, menacing shot, etc.). I find the maneuvers more useful than the arcane archer shots.
Fighter's abilities are nice that they refresh on a short rest whereas most of Ranger refreshes on a long rest.
Cleric is nice since it gets you more slots/caster levels while adding some more versatility to your spells. Channel divinity is also useful.
You want two lvls of fighter for Action Surge. You probably want life cleric dip for super berries. You probably want 3 assassin levels for crits. You could theoretically do 1 life cleric, 2 fighter, 3 rogue, in whatever combination you feel fit. I'm basically referencing tabletopbuild's flagship ranger build and recommending suitable things.
I'd definitely rush for fighter 2 though. It's just too good to pass up
By level 14 rangers should be transitioning/transitioned from melee/missile combat focused to spell combat focused. For that reason it’s worth looking past the action surge/battlemage physical combat boosts to magical boosts. The problem is that your only gong to get 6 levels of full caster (bard/mage/cleric/druid/sorceror). You do end up as a L13 caster for spell slots so that helps. Then you have to decide which caster you want to be. Mages have perks but have to carry around that spellbook. Druid doesn’t really add that much as wildshape doesn’t help casting. Bard calls for high charisma and opens up social casting but you pretty much have to have high charisma which, as a gloomstalker you probably don’t. Sorceror has the same problem but the battle spells may be worth it - or not. That leaves cleric with your wisdom based spells as probably your best option. Keep in mind you will only have L3 cleric spells at best and L3 ranger spells even if you have L6 spell slots as a L13 caster.
