The caveat is that combat normally does not last a whole hour. Based on one turn being six seconds (one minute spell lasting ten rounds of combat), hunter's mark is only useful for a short time.
Yeah. The problem isn't a lack of good spells. 4th has Conjure Woodland Beings, Grasping Vine, and Summon Elemental. Those are all great.
Unfortunately they all require concentration and thus compete with hunter's mark. In fact they compete quite favorably. Spreadsheet optmizers hate it because they can't attack in turn 1 and use those spellsAND they can't use HM at the same time. I am not sure its that big of a deal. Most combats are more complicated than the spreadsheets take into account.
Meh. Conjuration spells are now severely nerfed. On top of that, a 4th level spell Ranger isn't commonly seen in play; or if you do play one, it's very likely only using their spells for a minuscule 1 to 2 levels before the char gets retired to start a new campaign. At least with 3rd level spells like Conjure Animals, you were very likely to see it get serious play in older editions. Current Conjure Animals is bunk. So is Conjure Woodland Beings. But HEY, we get to use Hunter's Mark for more stuff, so surely that makes everything better, right?
