War caster allows a spell with a casting time of an action as an attack of opportunity at the creature. HM has a casting time of a bonus action. Can a ranger with war caster cast HM as an "attack of opportunity" or does the bonus action casting not count towards the action requirement?
No, because as you said, Hunter's Mark has a casting time of a bonus action, and War Caster requires that the spell used have a casting time of one action.
The naming is a bit counter-intuitive, but actions and bonus actions are different, separate things and they're not interchangeable.
Thanks. That's what I thought. I'll probably use WC to trigger charm person with my FW to try to kick off a cascade of charm/fear with the FW class feature.

That's a neat idea. Unfortunately there are not a lot of general Ranger spells that work with that War Caster feature.
