At this point a month out from release I have now watched and rewatched all the videos and I find the split in the youtube reviewer community fascinating.
Some say its overpowered due to the ability to reach amazing Armor Classes if optimized for: Half Plate+Shield+Dex+Defense+HW+Def Duelist = 10+5+2+2+1+3+3 = 26. But if optmized in this way you end up with a very low DPR Ranger and HW does not address this until their level 11 feature. You also don't have a taunt feature to draw attacks. So its kind of an empty high AC.
Some say its overly relying on Hunter's Mark. This seems to be a continued complaint about the base Ranger being over relied on HM, but if you add up what HM gives you via Hollow Warden it ends up being your best spell to cast until you get 4th level spells. You may find that boring, but it will be extremely effective.
My view is that Ranger mechanically has 3 main design issues and Hollow Warden addresses them as well or better than most other subclasses (plenty of flavor design issues, but not getting into that): 1. Concentration protection. Paladin, Warlock, Artificer, Blade Singer, Eldritch Knight all get concentration protection from their class or subclass. Ranger relies as much or more on concentration spells yet gets nothing until level 13 and that only applies to HM. Hollow Warden is the only subclass to boost con saves with their level 7 feature adding wis mod to con saves. 2. Tier 3 damage increase. The level 11 feature for HW relies on HM but is a very real increase in DPR. It's not quite extra, extra attack, but its good. 3. Over reliance on a 1st level spell for upper level features. The problem here for Ranger in general is that HM is not as good of a spell as Conjure Animals or other 3rd-5th level spells, but if you don't cast HM you don't get access to your level 13, 17, 20 features. HW does not "fix" this, but it does make HM good enough that it is arguably better than your upper level spells.
So where do you fall in this divide? Is it broken or is it terrible?
My take is the Hollow Warden is not broken, nor is it the best EVER Ranger subclass. It will certainly be one of the stronger melee options. The AC bump will be most useful in melee, but even a longbow Ranger will find the the +3 to their AC useful. The lack of tier 1 damage bump (no +1d4 or 1d8 to a hit each turn), means that it is slightly behind the other Rangers for DPR (which isn't that big of a deal since Rangers are fine in Tier 1). But you can't say its broken when it is objectively behind in damage in tier 1 and 2.
The AC and Con protection are both very good and for a more defensive minded player one of the stronger defensive subclasses. Gloom stalker with invisibility in darkness and wisdom save proficiency is in the same ball park and I am not sure defensively which is stronger. The level 11 feature is great, but I will need to play it some to see how often it triggers. Given you didn't get a damage bump at level 3 it should come out ahead. I don't mind concentrating on Hunter's Mark all the time, but I also note that concentrating on Conjure Animals will be easier with Con Save protection.
In the end I like that the subclass will play different than others. Its mechanically strong and I am not worried about the AC. I am currently playing a damn near unhittable sword and board paladin and I have played through the reduced DPR of that build, so I know the tradeoff. Also I know that the DM still has plenty of options including hitting the rest of the party. I hope it prints as written. Looks like fun.
