Hi all. I wanted to share my homebrew changes for Ranger. I tried to keep it minimal, focusing on making favored enemy easier to use and bring utility stuff back that got cut in 5.5e. Let me know what you think.
Level 1: Favoured Enemy -
Is now only up to 4 uses (use increase at 9 and 17 removed) but you would regain an expended use back on a short rest. Levels 9 and 17 instead increase the damage die of HM to d8 and d10 (respectively. See Foe Slayer for more).
Also, If you cast Hunter’s Mark using Favoured Enemy, You can cast it as part of another bonus action that isn’t casting a spell (freeing up your bonus action)
Level 3: Primal Spells -
This would be Tasha’s Primal Awareness replacement feature, but changed to function identically to subclass bonus spells (no free casts, but always prepared and don’t count against spells known, etc). This adds some spellcasting to subclasses that previously had none and makes Ranger’s spells prepared count closer to Artificer and Paladin.
Includes Speak with Animals, Speak with Plants, Locate Creature & Commune with Nature, but Beast Sense is replaced with Pass without Trace (to make up for the loss of Hide in Plain Sight).
Level 6: Wild Grasp -
New feature that acts as an alternative use for Favored Enemy “As a Magic action, you can expend a use of your Favored Enemy feature to summon spectral vines or ropes to entangle your foes. Choose a point you can see within 60 feet of you. Each creature of your choice within a 10 foot radius sphere centred on that point must make a Strength saving throw against your spell save DC or have the Restrained condition for 1 minute. A creature can repeat the saving throw at the end of each of its turns, ending the Restrained condition on a success.”
Level 10: Land Stride -
is back as a movement focused feature (like bg3) of Tireless and now reads “You can move across difficult terrain without expending extra movement while you aren’t wearing Heavy Armor.”
Level 17: Prepared Hunter -
Replaces Precise Hunter “if you have no uses remaining of your Favored Enemy feature when you roll initiative, you regain one use”
Level 20: For Slayer -
Since 1d10 HM damage die is at 17, I thought this could now be basically on-demand Arrow of Slaying based on the name “You can launch a powerful strike against the target of your Hunter's Mark. Once on your turn when you hit a creature marked by your Hunter's Mark with an attack that deals damage, you can force the target to make a Constitution saving throw against your spell save DC. On a failed save, the creature takes 6d10 additional Force damage, or half that much extra damage on a successful save.
Once you use this feature, you cannot use it again until you finish a short or long rest. Unless you expend a 5th level spell slot (no action required) to use it again.”
