Hello All! I am very new to DnD, so please bear with me (grrr).
I found a build online for a strength ranger, which I have made for my half orc character, which I am loving! Her stats are: ST 20, DX 11, CN, 17, IN 11, WS 11, CH 9
I am in a campaign that is a homebrew with a very high magic setting - I am only at level 3 (milestone) and I have 2 wondrous items already (hence the higher than normal stats). One of which is the berserker axe, which has been a lot of fun already. The axe has given my character a bit of an edge, and the rest of the players (who are much more experienced than me) have mentioned that multiclassing into barbarian would be a good move for my character as it makes sense and fits with the story.
I have no idea how to level up my character - I still haven't picked an archetype for level 3, and we have levelled up again! So now level 4 and I am a bit stuck. One of the players in my game has sent me the Xandar's Guide, which is apparently a lot better for rangers than the PHB, but I am still struggling. I am thinking Monster Slayer (my half orc's tribe was destroyed by a dragon, so that fit with her backstory) but I think her high strength does suit a barb play style...
Can anyone help me with this? I am struggling... If I have left out an important piece of info that you need to help me, please let me know and I will reply straight away! :) Many thanks in advance x
At level 5, rangers double the amount of spell slots they have, get access to level 2 spells, and get extra attack. Level 5 is a very nice level for rangers!
Well, there is no reason to muliticlass from ranger really. Since you are focused on Str I assume you are mainly interested in melee so take the Hunter subclass and choose Colossus Slayer at 3rd level, Multiattack Defense at 7th, Whirlwind Attack at 11th and Uncanny Dodge at 15th. Is your axe a Greataxe? If so than be sure to pick up the Great Weapon Master feat at some point.
The above would make for a decent character. Maybe not top line damage output but it would be effective and fun. Personally, since you are new I would recommend not multi classing as it is really easy to mess up and drastically delay important things like Ability improvements or Extra Attack.
I would wait till 5 as stated, then if you do multi class I would take Fighter over barbarian, the best thing about barbarian is rage and Ranger spells are too good to not use. Hunter is nice, but I personally love the Gloomstalker.
Fighter would offer more then Barb as for options too, extra fighting style, action surge, and a few options for builds.
Alternatively, find a finesse weapon and start taking Rogue levels, you’ll get sneak attack, cunning action, expertise, evasion and uncanny dodge faster then through Ranger

Yeah, this would be my feeling here too. Rage = no spells for you, so you wouldn't get the benefit of even Hunter's Mark. Tradeoff is a bit less damage, but you can easily play a skirmisher role if this is a problem.
Fighter and Rogue offer so much more.

A ranger needs dexterity 13 and wisdom 13 to multiclass
Assuming you must follow the multiclass restrictions (DEX 13 and WIS 13), I would not multiclass at all.
If your DM waives the multiclass restrictions, I would get ranger level 5 before any multiclassing.
Can you change your stat allotments? That's a lot of odd-numbered stats.
Ooooh I don’t know. I think the DM would waiver the restrictions if it fits the character and story better. It’s home-brew and fun trumps rules.
Why wait to level 5?

Spells you will want to consider would be Hunter's Mark, Guardian of Nature and Steel Wind Strike. Most of the other spell choices would be personal choice.

Current Characters I am playing: Dr Konstantin van Wulf | Taegen Willowrun | Mad Magnar
Check out my homebrew: Items | Monsters | Spells | Subclasses | Feats
