I played D&D when it was AD&D. Rangers were best in wilderness outdoor environments. Is there a build for a Ranger particularly suited to underground dungeon encounters?
Gloom Stalker is *THE* underground Ranger, but really any of them can fit the bill. Hunter = hunts stuff; can easily be adapted to underground things. Beastmaster = opportunity for interesting new companions underground. Horizon Walker = plenty of unusual gates and portals in the Underdark, or could be tracking interplanar beings down there (i.e. mind flayers and the like). And Monster Hunter = well, there's plenty of big bad monsters underground you can justify this.

Gloomstalker from Xanathars Guide is just that - underground they are absolutely insane!
I'll have to check that out.
After that, I'll try to write an adventure that brings out the best in this character.

So choose what you like, really.
To be fair Gloomstalker is THE darkness Ranger, be that underground or above ground at night.
