So help me get this right. I am trying out the beast master...I get it at this point I am a gloried Pokemon master because pretty much if I want my animal to do anything all my attacks, movement, etc go through it. Now when I hit level 5 I get my extra attack. Now lets say I get myself setup... there is a target in the middle lets say...an orc. Orcs in the middle I am on the left and I have a black bear on the right. Now the black bear has Multi attack (one with bite and other with claws.) IF!!!! I am reading this right I can have my bear do its attack along with its multi attack, THEN! I myself use my extra attack doing a somewhat 3 attacks if you want to count the black bears multi attack as a extra? And yes call me crazy my ranger is a close range, I am experimenting with something.

Not quite. Multiattack is not the attack action. The level 11 beast master feature lets you use multiattack. So at level 11, you essentially get 3 attacks.
Seems to me, if you always use your action to command your beast to attack, you never make an attack yourself. Your own action and extra attack would apply when your beast doesn't attack. I think I know what Ranger sub I'll never use...
The BM ranger animal cripples the BM ranger, the action you give up means you dont attack, and your BM animal doesnt get to multi attack till alter. When you gain two attacks you can give your BM pet an attack (but not multi attack) at the cost of one of yours when your reach the right subclass feature level. Finally you will eventually be able to give your creature its multiattack or two attacks if it doesnt have multiattack at the cost of one of your attacks. Its a source of unending misery for players who want to love BM rangers but cant.
The best way to utilize BM from levels 1-10 is with an animal that has the Pack Tactics trait. You're giving up your own attack, but if the animal is attacking with near-constant advantage, that's worth it.

You don't know what fear is until you've witnessed a drunk bird divebombing you while carrying a screaming Kobold throwing fire anywhere and everywhere.
Kraish, what second action? Extra attack isnt an extra action unfortunately. It means your action can grant you two attacks instead of one, you give up one to allow your beast to attack once.

Don't overlook this line "Once you have the Extra Attack feature, you can make one weapon attack yourself when you command the beast to take the Attack action."
My Question to this would be the part of the text that reads
Once you have the Extra Attack feature, you can make one weapon attack yourself when you command the beast to take the Attack action.
So once you have the class feature and you use your action to command the beast to attack you are granted one weapon attack. But that it still just one action, and you could use your extra action to deliver a second command to your beast granting you another weapon attack. This would give you 4 attacks issued from one character and would mean an significant increase in potential damage output helping it keep up with other classes. But is that a correct interpretation of the phrase?
Every creature only has 1 Action, 1 Bonus action, and 1 reaction unless they have a feature that grants them additional ones. The ranger does not have such a feature.
Sorry for the noob question folks, I am still kinda new to D&D ^_^""

Thanks for the help folks, I guess it would help if I read deeper into my class features and into my books instead of assuming right at the level i'm at.

I think what would fix this class is if the beast were commanded to do something, like attack a target, protect an ally, it would stay on that task until it was unable to do so or received a new command. Fire and forget if you will.

Almost like in a video game set in attack mode, or guard mode. Attack mode *Points at target and goes for it and attacks blah blah blah.* Guard mode *Stays with you and attacks anything hostile in a certain radius.*

This is probably the 3rd time somebody has asked this question in the last 30 days. It's almost like the rules for this sub-class are intentionally confusing.
The other thing useful about an Animal Companion's attack is if it has a bonus condition applied when it hits successfully. In addition to the Pack Tactics referenced earlier, any beast that can restrain or inflict a strong poison can be quite helpful. Constrictor snake, giant crab, giant venomous snake, and the flying snake are useful options from level 3.

I misunderstood the extra attack feature thanks for the clarification
No worries, Honestly you arent alone in hoping there was a way the BM hunter /pet would work well.
