So, our group recently reached level 6 and my DM gave the approval for me to either level up as normal or add a class. My character is a Melee Dragonborn Ranger who dual wields swords. One is Flame Tongue and the other is a home brew +1 short sword. She does good work and she’s one of the tanks of the group. With her being up close and engaging in hand to hand combat, I want her to be able to hit harder and have the ability to take more damage. I’m very tempted to add the Paladin class and when able to choosing the Oath of Devotion. Divine Smite being a big reason. I already have the Tough feat but I don’t think there is any HP advantages with adding the Paladin class. I may be wrong. I’ve also considered Moon Druid. I’m leaning more towards Paladin since the homebrew weapon my character yields is an oath blade and is from a LG god and my character is striving to bring out the swords full potential. The oaths so far are centered a tough d justice and destroying evil. I apologize for any mistakes as I’m still very new to DND and this is my first chapter and campaign! I’m looking for opinions!
What ranger subclass are you? A good pally subclass for ranger multiclass would be oath of the ancients. You are right that there is no increase to hp. Moon druid is a lot easier to multiclass into as you only need 13 wisdom, which you should have, and dex 13, which you should have. However, for paladin you need 13 charisma and strength. Moon druids get wild shape and because you would be level eight, then you can turn into Cr 2 animals, Cr 3 at level 9. That means a polar bear if you've seen it. However, no matter what I may suggest, choose what you like the look of.

If your ranger is wild in combat and it thematically fits what about a level of Barbarian?
It wouldn't give you the high burst damage of a paladin, but a little more damage consistently and would certainly give you much higher survivability in prolonged melee combat with slash/pierce/bludge damage being reduced. Path of the zealot might fit the oath to your god.
MC'ing into Paladin doesn't really help you I think. You gain nova potential with smites, some healing with lay on hands, auras if you go high enough, some spell versatility with more and prepared spells. You don't gain any proficiencies, you won't be able to use heavy armour, you won''t benefit form extra attack at paladin lvl 5, you already have d10 hit dice, it's a completely MADening multiclass (multiple ability dependency).
Seeing as you need to have both DEX and WIS at 13 or higher to MC at all from Ranger, the easiest to MC into are Druid, Cleric and Fighter, if you have STR at 13 Barbarian is an option as well. If you want Heavy Armour proficiency, Cleric is the only way to go, aside from taking a feat, as the domains that get that get it from the domain and not the class, meaning anyone who is a i.e. Forge domain cleric has it. There are several other domains that get it like Nature for some reason, which might be a god fit thematically. A fighter lets you be more frontline like with Secon Wind and Action surge and som nice subclass features at lvl 3, again you won't benefit from extra attack at Fighter lvl 5 but you will at Fighter lvl 11. if you go that high you'll also benefit from 2 extra ASI's meaning two feats or four ability score increases, or a feat and two ability score increases. Barbarians are nice for frontlining with their rage letting them halve any bludgeoning, piercing and slashing damage. Raging interferes with any spellcasting though. Agian, you won't benefit from any extra attack from barbarian, you do get d12 hit dice though. Druids doesn't really say frontline except for Moon Druids because of their bonus to Wild Shapes, which is determined by druid level by the way, not overall level. Both Cleric and Druid gioves you d8 hit dice, prepared spells and advanced spell slot progression compared to a full ranger.

I was thinking about MC into a paladin as well, mostly for RP. Still, I think it gives you some benefits.
