Quick question. Can I shoot with a bow then use mask of wild (wood elf) to hide in a forest . Ready somewhere that can activate mask of wild as a bonus action.
But according to D&D Beyond on my character sheet it states "no action". So would that still make it a free action?
I think it states no action because its a passive effect. You always have the ability to hide with light obscurement. You do have to still follow the rules for hiding whatever they are for your build/class you can just do it in more places than others. Its a very slight distinction.
It would mean you can attempt to hide without using your action economy. Moving would still need to be used to go to the place you want to hide at. You don't auto succeed, or simply vanish either. You would still need to roll to make the attempt, beating the passive perception of the creatures you're trying to hide from.
It's a special rule for the Woodelf race (they get so few specifically as it is) Since anyone can attempt to hide in lightly obscured area, it would be a worthless trait for a subrace to have if it specifically mentioned hiding in this way that is available to anyone and used only in the same way all races can hide.
It would be similar to the fly ability that Aarokocra have, only to then say that well all races can fly. It takes away from what makes them special. Why even bother picking them at all if there wasn't a special rule attached? Wood elves are close to nature and it makes sense that they could attempt to hide more easily. As opposed to their moon, sun, and drow kin who have their own special skills to be considered when making a character.

If you have an ability that lets you Hide as a bonus action, yes. If you do not, then you have to use your action to Hide.
