I think it definitely depends on your alignment and personality. If they are lawful, they are probably quiet and withdrawn or if they are chaotic, they will probably go up to people, talking and offending at random. For my quiet but chaotic ranger, I just am brutally honest all the time. I find that works well and fits my character.
As a ranger he could easily just be one of those "more comfortable with animals than people" types. Hygiene may not be a priority, because animals don't have fancy perfumed soaps, and dirty clothes keep you just as warm and protected as clean ones. He can be blunt and gruff because nature is honest and fair where politeness isn't even a concept that exists.

Low Charisma does not mean "not a friendly person". A friendly person is more of having good in Alignment. Low charisma doesn't mean being a jerk.
There are some examples of low Charisma:
you are terrible at lying.
You aren't good at winning an argument. However, you may not lose an argument since wisdom is the defensive stats.
You don't know how to deliver bad news.
You have no idea what to do at a party.
A low Charisma friendly person is the best friendly person. they don't lie (because they can't). Their friendships are sample and truthful. They are wonderful people if the Alignment is "good".

Find your own truth, choose your enemies carefully, and never deal with a dragon.
"Canon" is what's factual to D&D lore. "Cannon" is what you're going to be shot with if you keep getting the word wrong.
