I am playing a character in tomb of annihilation. Currently a 2nd level variant human fighter with GWM feat and GWF fighting style. The character is ok as a fighter, but not great. She has an 18 intelligence but only 14 dex, 14 strength (and 13 wisdom).
I was originally going to multiclass to a wizard after level 5 fighter but I now think I am going to go to Ranger, probably at next level up. A big part of this is my party has no one proficient in survival and we keep getting lost (the NPC guides we hired apparantly suck at this too). I plan to take Ranger to level 5 and get expert-level survival, archery style, sharpshooter and 2 attacks. After that go for arcane archer at level 3 fighter, probably go to 4 for the feat. Maybe take 2 levels in wizard, and then ranger the rest of the way. We are using the original ranger by the way, no UA at the table.
Looking at the two subclasses I wonder which will work better for her - She is a human, so darkvision would be a boon as would invisibility in darkness and wisdom saves, the other stuff seems "meh", the free extra attack and damage in the first turn seems awesome but ... the horizon walker seems more reliable in terms of extra damage every round, but at the cost of a bonus action every round. Etherealness would be great too, but it is a while before I would have it.
On a side note she is the only martial class in the party and we have a wizard, so while staying fighter/ranger is not ideal for her stats, it probably works better for the party and still gives me a few spells to play with
Also no spoilers please, but what would you recommend for favored enemy on this campaign? So far we encountered giants, dinosaurs and undead, I know there should be yuan-ti crawling around this jungle too, based on books and an AD&D campaign from long ago.
I know you are asking for a ranger, but did you think about Artificer? It would play to your high Inteligence, you could keep on useing GWM & GWF, you get poison free food and water and a source for magical weapons against those undead.
I second artificer. Ranger would be good still. I like the idea of gloomstalker, as your dex isn't so good, and so the bonus to initiative is good. However, the more damage every turn is good from horizon walker, and it is all force, which is one of the least the resisted damage types.

I don't know if artificer is allowed at the table. Where is it published? Generally the DM lets us use anything in the PHB, DMG, XGE or SCAG.
Also, do you get any extra skills when you multiclass to artificer? Looking at the online description it does not appear survival is one of their skills, so that is not going to help with our getting lost problem.

Artificer is published in Eberron: Rising from the Last War.

You can always ask. If your DM is worried about the technology heavy flavour of the Artificer, you can always reskin it into a more vodoo like apearence. You also gain proficiency in tinker tools and thief tools at lvl 1. if you go for lvl 3 and choose battlesmith, you gain black smith tools and at lvl 6 you gain expertise in all the tool proviciencies you know.
What background do you have? I would also ask the DM if you can learn survival. It may take some time, but that can be glossed over. And you don't need to trek back to base, as survival is natural. Or you could do it in one of the more recent articles on here. It is all about out of game stuff. Ask DM if you could do some of that stuff, to learn the survival skill.

My background is cloistered scholar. I doubt the party wants to wait for me to learn it and I think the DM will just suggest I take the skilled feat for the next feat (which at that point would really be better for the cleric in the party with her higher wisdom). Ranger gives me expertise in it too in favored terrain.
I think I will go with gloom stalker and undead as FE.
I really enjoy roleplaying my gloom stalker multiclassed as rogue scout. Needed the dark vision and love the invisibility. Think he'd be fun to play as a warlock with devils sight lol
I leveled up at the end of the session today and took the ranger class. First time I played a ranger and missed one little line - It is impossible to get lost in favored terrain. That is awesome as it is better than the skill and double proficiency!

Undead are a good favored enemy.
