This is so disappointing. Everyone says range is a weak class to beging with. Then you take more away. I give up on ranger class. It has always been my favorite class. Been playing since 1980. My ranger is hanging up his cloak. Way to go go Wizards of the Coast.

Just means WofTC hates rangers in general. They tease us for a year with the UA then in the black of night steal it away with something so pathetic. It won't work on multiple attacks, is concentration and damage is aweful. Come on WofTC how can you even try and defend what your doing to the ranger class.

The UA went way too far (WotC often does in UA); it being toned down should not be a surprise, especially since it's a "free" feature that costs you nothing to have, and you don't need to take.

I agree that the UA went too far, but to say that it's ok that the new one is lame is fine because it is optional and you don't have to take it is being too generous.
I totally agree the requirement for Favored Foe concentration is shitty and i cannot fathom why they nerfed so hard. I mean, who EXACTLY have they made happy by doing that (?) ‘cause they sure have upset many! I’d be interested to hear feedback from any and all who think this version of FF as they’ve done it in Tasha’s is spot on.... please do chime in whoever you are! (I suppose one cohort that is happy are the aggrieved ranger lovers who have nothing better to do with their time than home brew ranger improvements lol)
At a bare minimum, the Tasha’s Fav Foe should be errata’d to specify that it lasts for a minute or until concentration is broken, whichever is greater. Then, at the very least you are not at risk of losing the use of the feature one turn in due to a crappy Con saving throw roll after taking damage. In a tough fight you could burn through your usages of it very quickly.
As it now stands I’d almost be tempted to try to sell my DM on the idea that I keep Favored Enemy but on the understanding that an enemy type could be swapped out during a long rest. Alternately, possibly try to ask for the Tracker feat as a sub for FE or FF. it’s quite punchy as you get a free HM, +1 to Wis and adv on Survival checks to track. I would argue that it’s better than either FF or FE as they are currently written.
I think we should all remember that: 1. These are (the entire book in fact, and the WotC is really making a big deal about it for some reason) optional rules. None of them, all of them, or some of them can be used even on a player by player basis, as allowed by the DM. 1. Favored foe can replace favored enemy, which many folks seem to value as nothing (not me, I like the ability). Favored foe can get rid of a skill based, open ended, non-combat oriented ability with one that is the opposite of that. 3. Favored foe has the added benefit of being the trigger for the level 20 ability, foe slayer, which now makes that very much more usable. 4. Hunter’s mark is mathematically better than this, especially from levels 1-6, but that is only in a perfect world with a single big boss. Fighting lots of enemies hunter’s mark might be targetless once a turn. 5. Favored foe free up spell slots, I’ll admit just level 1 slots, that can be used for other spells, concentration or not. Fog cloud, healing word, good berry, ensnaring strike, and the like. We are no longer “loosing” a spell slot if we cast one of these other spells. Plus, hunter’s mark becomes even MORE valuable because it is the main way in which a ranger tracks a creature with advantage. 6. Favored foe can be used with many of the ranger’s subclass abilities very well. Beast master, horizon walker, for example. And favored foe can be added onto spells like lightning arrow and hail of thorns for both a little bit of added damage on the same turn, stoning hunter’s mark can’t do.
My biggest complaint isn’t the concentration. That’s fine actually. It’s the inability to transfer favored foe like hunter’s mark once the first target is slain. That is the biggest mistake, and the mistake I’ll put my money on receiving an errata in the future. Anyone you says newer books don’t receive errata please recall the errata that just came out of Eberon and the infamous errata to healing spirit in XGtE.
Yeah. I “love it” 🙄 when I suggest a home brew idea or interpretation of a rule and the KISS RAW lawyers will tell me “That’s not RAW!!!” but then go on to tell me how this or that UA is better. Sheesh. Talk about hypocrisy.

What errata happened to healing spirit?
just googled it, and that is a pretty big change, still makes healing spirit an excellent option, 1bonus action 2d6-6d6 heal for a single 2nd level spell slot
Healing Spirit (p. 157). The following text has been appended to the second paragraph: “The spirit can heal a number of times equal to 1 + your spellcasting ability modifier (minimum of twice). After healing that number of times, the spirit disappears.\
The amount of total times creatures can be healed by the spell is now limited to 1 + spellcasting modifier instead of an amount limited only to the duration of the spell.
So it’s still great in combat. The change was to prevent out of combat massive healing.
Favored Foe is printed as written in the previous leaks.
Did somebody break the street date to give you this information?
A dumb move, but it's their move to make.

Nothing has been taken away.
Jounichi1983, next long term game I run will be the three core rule books only. No multiclassing. Gritty realism.
New and shiny, eh?

True were back where we stated using hunters mark with concentration and lost an ability. Again pathetic 😒
