Its actually a one minute duration (per spell level expended) - the only reason I can think of for that would be the ability to ask multiple questions (presumable one per action - although this would generally not be a combat task as such) - For example.
Is there an Undead within my range?
Is there an Undead with 500 yards?
Is there a aberrations, celestials, dragon, elemental, fey, fiend, or undead within my range?
My sense is that the ranger should be able to (roughly) control how far they extend this sense (as well as the creature type(s)) they are looking for.
The DM has the final say. The ability tells the ranger a "yes or no" answer for each creature type.
The range is controlled for each action and spell slot used.
The time can be useful if you are moving fast or something is moving towards or away from you.
In my experience the ability is a lot more fun and useful than it reads. Pop it off before a rest, before going into a dungeon or cavern, when you think you're getting close to your quarry, or when you are in a city or any place there SHOULDN'T be anything that isn't "natural".

you are correct I said 10 min but intended to say ten turns. (I made an edit)basically at any point you should be able to ask for any creature for the duration free of action cost. you just know if they are present.
I think that is that if you could extend/shorten it at will it would be a very powerful feature indeed. It would basically be guaranteeing a distance to each type. I have never seen any dm rule it that way. I still believe its powerful without adjusting mid duration but many disagree.
