...his favored enemies are fiends, hobbits, humans, elves, and orcs. He speaks many languages, and knows much more about these creature types, including history.
...the land of Hobbiton, the mountains, and the land of Mordor are his “favored terrain”. He knows much of their layout, history, and what inhabitants that live there.
counterpoint: nothing in the ranger's kit can explain the nonsense he is able to do with fireworks, yes magic item creation rules are very relaxed in 5e but still

In the LotR books and movies Gandalf is actually (in D&D 5E terms) a high level ranger, and here’s why...
...he speaks with animals. Several times, and to great effect.
...when traveling in the wilderness he is able to “pass without trace” and come and go as he pleases without the others knowing.
...his favored enemies are fiends, hobbits, humans, elves, and orcs. He speaks many languages, and knows much more about these creature types, including history.
...he fights well with a longsword and/or duel wields a sword and staff.
...when they were all stuck in a tree he took down a pine cone and cast lightning arrow on it. Then he “conjured” giant eagles for them to fly away.
...he has healing abilities, but not as great as Elrond (who is definitely a cleric or paladin).
...he moves at great speed and unnoticed when alone in the wilderness.
...he was able to “hide in plain sight” and appear suddenly when the trolls were hit with the sunrise.
...the land of Hobbiton, the mountains, and the land of Mordor are his “favored terrain”. He knows much of their layout, history, and what inhabitants that live there.
How many "Gandalf is a -----" threads are there?
I have a weird sense of humor.
I also make maps.(That's a link)
Lots! LOL!
Not enough!
Even the one time he turned invisible could have simply been via a potion.
I've thought about this a lot since the initial post.
I'm 100% convinced that Gandalf is a ranger in D&D 5E.
I have no memory of this place...
HA!
Ok. So definitely not the outlander background or keen mind feat. Mark those off the list.
It's because Gandalf is a bard and can do everything everyone else can do. ;-)
A ranger is never early, nor is he late. He arrives precisely when he means to. (which is twice as fast as most expect, because of Natural Explorer.)
Come participate in the Competition of the Finest Brews, Edition XXVIII?
