Let's say you were given a suit of serpent scale armor. You want to build a rogue tank. How would you go about doing this? I'm gonna start as a githyanki for medium armor and misty step. What subclass would you choose and why?
I would go half orc, hill dwarf, or goliath, putting the +2 in dex and +1 in con with Tasha's rules. Studded Leather with 20 dex is just as good as Half Plate and 14 dex. Uncanny Dodge helps avoid damage and I'll edit more stuff in when I feel like looking something up instead of doing this off of my nearly complete memory of 5e rules.
I forgot to mention that serpent scale allows the user to apply full dex to AC. So serpent scale with Dex 18 would be AC 18.
Okay. I haven't read much of CM yet. So go with githyanki and use rogue abilities to avoid damage. Looking at subclasses, Arcane Trickster's a no, Assassin's a no, Inquisitive's a no, Mastermind's a no, Phantom kind of works, Soulknife's not very good for a tank but fits a githyanki, scout's okay, and thief's a no. None of the subclasses are great for tanking, at least by skimming, so I would rely on Uncanny Dodge, Evasion, and Elusive. Overall, it's an okay tank, but nowhere near as good as a lot of other builds.
I'm thinking swashbuckler as your subclass. Rakish Audacity gives you a boost to your initiative and the ability to get sneak attack without anyone around. Fancy footwork allows you to essentially disengage while using two (light) weapon fighting.

I missed swashbuckler skimming. It's probably best.

I have a weird sense of humor.
