Marcellus is a tabaxi rogue swashbuckler, charlatan background. He was heavily into forging documents, duplicating artwork and antiquities, that sort of thing. I was playing him as someone who would b.s. his way into places, heavy RP, but always ready with a burst of speed to get himself out of sticky situations.
Then he got mixed up in an exploration of a newly discovered portion of Undermountain, and found a ring (dm homebrewed) that had a bit of the shadowfell in it. That altered my thoughts for character progression (was going to go rogue 5 and then pick up a bit of fighter) Instead he’s currently rogue 4/shadow sorcerer 1, and he is struggling with the ever present pull of the shadowfell contained in this ring. He is no longer as flamboyant in his actions, and has gone a bit dark.
Right now he has washed up on a small patch of riverbank next to the Sargauth in Undermountain, his travelling companion nowhere in sight. It’s going to be an interesting time for Marcellus.
My rogue's strongest points are his charisma and dexterity-- his background is in spywork rather than thieving. So when it comes to his job, it's all about stealth in dungeons, and being disarming and affable when talking to people it might be useful to know or get information from-- and being aware of whether or not they're being honest with him. When it comes to combat, he largely prefers to hang back, find cover if he can, and attack with his crossbow. If he can get into position where he has advantage, of course, he takes it, and if he gets caught in melee combat then he makes do. He has a bonus to AC against attacks of opportunity so he doesn't worry about incurring one if he really needs to get some distance.
In terms of how I roleplay him with the party, he's actually really eager to bond with everyone. He's someone who's lost his family, along with most of his friends, and who's on a personal quest to find the only person out there who wasn't lost in the same disaster, and instead of his loss making him a cold and standoffish loner, it makes him more desperate for human connection than he was before. Earning his trust might take time/proving yourself in combat, but his friendship is pretty easy to come by. Definitely one of the friendliest rogues I have ever played (though I had a basic halfling thief who was also pretty chummy, as my first rogue).
My rogue also is more a spy than a thief in fact is very lawful.
Background is he works for the city watch and was tasked with finding out about the activities of suspected criminal gangs sometimes he would sneak into their premises while noone was around, at other times he would pose as gang member of associate of them.
As keeping cool under pressure would be vital for such a role I put one of her personality traits as she could stare down a hell hound without flinching, this was tested early on in her adventuring career as at level 2, with just 4 companions fought and killed over 20 enemies in a single battle (on their 4th encounter without a rest) and only a couple of hours later when the rest of the party where unable to help her she fought off an adult blue dragon with only a couple of NPC guards to help.
I think I have created every rogue except scout and assassin...
My first Adventurers League character is a half elf arcane trickster/bladesinger. He's become kind of a mad genius, literally. 2 levels of permanent madness from failed wisdom saves while fighting demons (It was 3. He's getting better!). It makes him more fun to play though. Started out as a Charlatan arcane trickster, joined the Zhentarim and found a bunch of spellbooks on a mission then started down the path of becoming more of a wizard. He's always seeking more knowledge, more power, and looking for legitimacy. He doesn't want to pretend he's a noble anymore. He wants to be a noble.
Whenever I play him I usually end up as the party tank because evasion/uncanny dodge/shield/bladesong + haste + tough feat make him incredibly hard to kill. His bladesong AC is 26, then 31 with shield and 33 with haste on. Encounters usually go like this,
DM: "Does a 25 hit?"
Me: "no."
DM: "Well, the next attack is a crit. I KNOW that hits! The vampire lord hits you for..."
Me: "Yeah, but I take half. I uncanny dodge."
DM: *facepalm*
I've also got a Goblin thief smuggler who is very fun to roleplay. I found the gloves of thievery and he tries stealing just about anything that isn't bolted down. When he's about to get caught he slips what he stole into someone else's pockets and slips away in the confusion.
I've also got a Swashbuckler/battlemaster that dual wields rapiers and is a whirlwind fighter. Mercenary veteran background in the society of the sword that will rush to duel the biggest bad guy.
I act careless rushing into battle or dangerous situations, but considering I have resistance to most damage raging and I can use my reaction for uncanny dodge on top of that it never has bitten me in the but. He is a bit cocky and loves to crack skulls.
I’m thinking about a multi class combination starring Swashbuckler, but has some similar subclasses like Paladin Oath of the Crown. The game style would be going first, isolating one monster from the rest of the group, and annihilating it.
I currently am playing a 5th level Hafling Rogue/Thief. Like most have said, I like to be sneaky and move around as much as possible. Last campaign round, the party was attacked by Orcs and an Orc Chieftain. I proceeded to shoot with my light crossbow, then to use my bonus action to hide in nearby bushes. Next turn, did the same except with the Orcs now engaged in melee with the party, was able to use my sneak attack to much success. Definitely need to move around a lot; if I stay in the thick of the action too much, I will get crushed quickly.

I am currently playing a Rogue/Thief as well. So fun to play and be the "utility" role in the group. Very well rounded. Currently playing a chaotic neutral half-elf who has a criminal background. I am playing the role very vanilla at the moment since I am pretty new to DnD.
My Rogue just made it to level 3. He is a Half-Elf whose family seem to be merchants, but are really thieves, spies and assassins. He grew up in this world, and is trying to decide which (if any) of the family paths he will follow.
I have him as an Inquisitive. He dashes ahead, checks for traps, sneaks attacks easy foes, and pockets the money before his group can follow him. He makes sure to only pocket the remainder, the amount of coins that cannot be divided by four. He is sauve, and likes to sit back and watch people while in a town. He is also helping to expand his family's merchant 'business' in new areas. He is always looking for ways to make the most money, and doesn't mind getting his hands dirty.
His motto, hide, kill, hide. And he doesn't mind using the big, dumb barbarian as a shield while doing so.
My rogue 1, warlock 3, Osxian, wanted to join an adventuring party really badly, and noticed one was short a tank. So she uses disguise self every hour (mask of many faces invocation) to appear as a half-orc blood hunter.

May all of your spells roll the best things for the situation on the wild magic table and all your checks to seduce dragons roll nat 20's
This particular Rogue Im playing is a Neutral Evil Tiefling. She's in it for the long game so no unnecessary fights or overt actions that would impede her long term goals; just a ton of machinations. Im playing her with Raven from Teen Titans and/or Daria from MTV in mind. She just doesnt care if she causes panic. She's a "Yeah I have horns. Get over it, I did." kind of character. She has no qualms in putting down anyone who gets between her and her goals My first playing this alignment and Im having a blast with her.
I play a halfling arcane trickster. I rolled a D20 for stats (I was taught to do it like that when I started playing). Because I did it like that, she had 20 STR at level 1. She also has a 4 in CHA, so it's kinda balanced depending on your perspective. ( homebrew world & campaign) Her alignment is Lawful Neutral. She is an extremist in regards to certain areas and feels "meh" in others and once she opens up and feels safe, can be passionate and a bit of a prankster. With consistency, and natural character development, the roleplay works. She will sacrifice herself for a child just as easily as she will murder a slaver in broad daylight ((VERY EASILY) because backstory reasons). I get WAY into character during sessions and it's fun. We're currently at level 9 and headed to rescue my brothers whom I haven't seen in 10 years (in game). I know they're in danger because a DMPC who died helping us fight Githyanki had a possession of one of my brothers on his body. Seeing this, I grew worried and consulted the party warlock and asked if he could use his amulet of divination to ask if he's alive. He was NOT in the mood to do that, but did let me do that myself. The DM's answer was "Yes, but in danger." I then convinced most of the party to come save him even though I haven't seen him in a decade and despite my TERRIBLE charisma.
Edit: UPDATE: We are almost at the destination. During the trip, the party found a portal to the feywild. On the other side, I got addicted to what I call Feyberries. They're basically goodberries that grow on bushes in the feywild and do what goodberries usually do as well as get you drunk and a magical random surge of emotion and memory. Despite over half of the party eating atleast one, we all managed to make it back to the material plane in time before the portal closed. I'm gonna be playing my character with a newfound obsession with going back to the feywild.
UPDATE 2: We reunited with my character's family. Her brother was saved, and she ABSORBED A STORM!!!! The Stormgirdle (EGTW) and an aberrant dragonmark (ERFTLW) came with absorbing a storm. The DM is a GENIUS!!! My character literally said "I need to re-evaluate my life." Also the party barbarian might be my character's adopted sister's half brother. He, and the party wizard, also got legendary items. We agreed not to have any of the other loot we found in the dungeon my character's brother was being held in. My character is now aware of the mental issues that slavery and child abuse left her with. Healing and self discovery is now a nessessity. I can't wait to roleplay the new awareness! 😁
I am playing a lightfoot halfling names Oswald and since he has a charisma of 18 I play as very foppish swashbuckler version of the Goblin King from Labyrinth. He breaks hearts and steals wallets.
Florena was a mastermind at the start of the campaign but when I wasn't enjoying it, the DM let me swap to arcane trickster and came up with a story explanation.
Her backstory has been described as 'cinderella meets the count of monte christo' with her being betrayed by her stepmother, replaced by an imposter and driven out as a child. Eventually falling under the tutelage of a master thief and becoming one in turn. She met the party while pursuing a lead to find out more about those that had betrayed her, ready to finally start putting her revenge plans into motion.
Out of combat, she's generally cautious. Preferring to scout areas out and avoid trouble when they can. Paranoid often to a fault, though she's been working past that some over time. She ended up falling into the leader role in the party, not so much out of a desire to 'be' the leader so much as it falling to her by default because everyone else wasn't suited or didn't want to have to make the choices etc that come with that. But while she is the 'leader' she takes input from the party and hasn't ever pulled rank on anyone in the party to demand they obey her or anything like that. She doesn't often do stuff like stealing anymore because if she got caught it'd mean trouble for the party and she has a sense of responsibility there. But when someone really, really deserves it, she's not above going back to her old ways.
In combat, as a rogue she's generally spending her turns trying to get sneak attack damage in of course, but there are times she'll cast a spell instead. There have been a couple clutch moments where she's disabled a foe with hiddeous laughter for multiple turns, or thrown out a strategically placed Darkness etc. She has the shadow blade spell for a backup incase she ever gets captured etc. However, while she is of course perfectly capable of melee fighting, she tends to prefer sniping. Using the careful aim optional rogue feature from Tasha's that the DM let me use, she'll often spend the first turn of combat getting into a good position and then, if she doesn't have to move, just sniping with aim from afar. But of course, not every fight goes that way. Sometimes we're in cramped areas, or surrounded etc, so she's able to mix it up in melee when she really has to, and has the booming blade cantrip for when she needs to make melee attacks.
I made a rogue based off white hat hackers. He had high charisma. Basically he'd go to the rich people and get them to pay him to help them find ways to improve their security. And then he uses those connections, maybe hiring someone to set up a distraction. He prefers the finer things in life and isn't keen to head into combat blind.
Hello. I play a Deep Gnome Rogue with Svirfneblin Magic as an innate feat at 4th level to strongly enhance my character's ability to be as stealth as possible. A Deep Gnome Rogue can cast Nondetection on themselves at will, disguise themselves, blind others, obscure their presence by blurring others vision, and they can cause others deafness. Plus they get Gnome Cunning, Darkvision 120 feet, and Stone Camouflage in rocky/stone environments.
The best weapons for this particular build are: Daggers, Darts, a Sling, and/or a Blowgun. Perfect for the Sneak Attack that Rogues are granted. This is a tremendous backdoor entry to a sniper position when played the right way.
Espionage? Scout? Assassin? A Deep Gnome is the ultimate Rogue! A Deep Gnome Rogue can cause a significant amount of concern for their enemies especially while lurking in the dark shadows. From dusk till dawn, you're basically an unseen force to be reckoned.
