Still new to dnd and might've bit off more than I can chew, Playing a Changeling Rouge [Arcane Trickster]. I had planned to have the character be much more of a background fighter but when I realized we only had 1 front-liner and I was the next marital class, I decide to play more aggressively. I hadn't picked up B/GF Blade, I'll have to pick them up later; but I muticlassed into Fighter. I plan to have a min of three lvls, but no more than five.
Trying to figure out which Fighter Subclass synergies well with Rouge AT. The one I'm considering are Battle Master, Arcane Archer, Echo Knight and Eldritch Knight. My Character doesn't have a particular attachment to any sub.
Battle Master - Helps with melee prowess and scales with Dex
Arcane Archer - Give interesting magic shots and scales with Int
Eldritch Knight - augments the spellcasting and give more options spell-wise
Echo Knight - Is really cool, but is frankly a free teleport and advantage (bonus action) which builds off the rogue sneak attack
I only plan to have (at most) five, so I'm really only getting the first dose of the sub I choose. My question is which path offers the most bang for the buck. I say five at the most due to me wanting to stick with rouge (and wanting Extra Attack), but if its better to jump ship to fighter, then so be it.
Can't speak for the other options, but I did not like the Rogue/Echo Knight spread. The echo and cunning action competing for the bonus action was not as compelling as I thought it would be and I ended up lagging behind other members in progression quite severely.
That said, Battle Master combined with a fighting style can make for a good combo since it can be made to not interfere with rogue abilities.

As I thought about this more and more... if you are more interested in minmaxing the party comp and intend on taking the tank role, I think it would be better to go full fighter. My reasoning is that it is easier to make a rogue-ish fighter than it is to make a fighter-ish rogue, at least with Battle Master, and the delayed progression that comes with multiclassing will make things rather boring when the rest of your group will probably be getting their stronger abilities (may just be my personal experience talking, though).
I like Arcane Archer for this. Main reason is your intelligence is already good. I also like the Superior Technique fighting style for this multiclass.
Echon Knight is powerful, but you do not need a lot of different ways to get advantage. With a Rogue you have steady aim and that works in melee too. You also have feinting attack. Those should be enough, I would be more concerned about my defense than advantage.
I do not like Eldritch Knight for this build. Reason being the 1/3rd class spell slots do not stack well. For example if you are a 4th or 5th level Rogue, when you become a 3rd level EK you won't get ANY more spell slots. No more at 4th or 5th level EK either. A 7th level single-classed AT has as MORE spellslots than a 5th level AT/5th level EK and the same number as a 6th-level AT/5th level EK.
I would strongly consider 6 levels of fighter because you get an ASI/feat at level 6. I really like Fey touched (with Hex) and shadow touched (with Cause Fear) for this build. If you think about it from a spell point of view, getting two free castings is going to be as more spell slots than you get with another level of AT at most levels. Both of these let you use your spell slots and are better spells than those available to an AT.
I would change your spells on the next Rogue level up. I would trade Find Familiar for Shield at Rogue-4 and Shield for Absorb Eelements at Rogue-5. You should already have your familiar, as long as you keep him away until you need him, you should not need to cast the spell again. Sleep obviously needs to go, but the options for replacing it are limited, so I would get rid of find familiar first.
See if your DM will let you replace one of the cantrips with a blade cantrips. Once you hit fighter 5 you are probably using extra attack, but until then the blade cantrip will be better.

If you're going to drop Find Familiar, I suggest writing or buying a couple of spell scrolls of the Find Familiar spell before you do. That way, you can recast later if you need to.
