I'm new to dnd and I'm making my first character. He's a Grung rogue pirate and i have a rough backstory but am having trouble figuring out how he went from being a pirate to an adventurer and why he is joining the party. Does anyone have any suggestions?
Also, do I need to or should i find a campaign first and then work the backstory around that?
My recommendation is to keep your back story fairly rough at first; focus on why they are the person that they are, rather than why they're adventuring, and avoid specific names for towns, related factions etc. until you know the setting (as that may provide you with some).
As for why a pirate might become an adventurer, there are a bunch of options that spring to mind, in no particular order:
Retired from piracy after too many close calls with the law.
Mutiny! Either your crew kicked you off your ship, or you tried to do the same to your captain and failed, either way ending up marooned somewhere.
Attacked. Maybe the rest of your (current) party were hired to stop your ship's piratical ways, and seeing an opportunity you switched sides to join them against your former crew (any survivors of which may want revenge…).
Wrecked. Your ship and crew were wrecked in a battle, leaving you as the sole survivor, or one of only a handful of survivors.
Cursed. Classic Pirates of the Caribbean; your thieving ways got you cursed and you're trying to find a way to lift it.
Landing party. Maybe you and your party are actually all crew mates from the same ship, or some crew and some mercenaries, but got separated from the rest of the ship? This will require you to talk to the group and DM to see if they're all onboard with being ship's crew. Even if it only works for some of the party it can be a good way to establish some of the party early, with the others joining later.
Just some thoughts; some will fit some campaigns better than others, so it's best not to commit to one idea right away.
I really like those ideas I now realise that I need to join a group and find out what kind of adventure it is before I can give them a motive or a place to end up. Thank you very much.
