Ok, so recently, my character encountered a dryad, which probed his mind somehow (homebrew dryad) and saw how he treated nature. After some lucky dodging and use of shield later, that event is over. Now, in a previous post i had asked about what to do in case of feats and decided to start with elven accuracy (amazing, literally never miss, will make a post on this), and planned to take shadow-touched to get invisibility and free up a spell known for shadow blade. Now before i ask the actual question, a little context is needed. My character is a High Elf rogue, (booming blade), and his family had been curse. His entire arc is he is learning how to control it. Now what i thought would be cool is if I take fey touched, i can pick up hex, and reflavour it as him afflicting his curse on someone else, or something like that. But that sucks because i will def pick shadow blade and not take invisibility at level 7, so at level 8 i dont know what is the best option. I am current;ly level 5, with still alot of xp to go, and might get a magic item in between that allows me to cast either, but i dont know. For some more context, we play on a west marches style server on discord with avrae
Oh shoot, just realised this is concentration, and I cant concentrate on shadow blade as well. How OP would hex be without concentration? (this is me being desperate because of how much Hex would suit my character)
For you I'd avoid Hex. It's a trap for characters with only one attack per round. I would choose Warcaster, so you can booming blade on opportunity attacks and more likely make your CON saves while in melee.
Yeah i guessed so. WI had thought of it because it wouldbe cool with my character, flavour wise, but I did realise 1d6 aint much for a rogue. Also failed to convince my DM to get hex with shadow touched. SO sticking with shadow touched and dropping hex. Thanks
While invisibility isn't a bad thing to have on a Rogue, a lot of the time you're going to be stealthy enough to sneak by anyway so I'm not sure it's as valuable as it might be to another character.
Personally I'd say that if you're going for a "passing on the curse" angle then you can already argue that that's what booming blade is doing? If you'd like to maximise that then Mobile might be an option if you'd like to keep your bonus action free to Dash or Hide, rather than having to Disengage. This would enable you to leap in, place the "curse of booming" and then leap out again with up to 80 feet of movement in a single turn (using Dash).
As others say War Caster could be a good option, though keep in mind that Rogues actually have some decent built in defence against concentration checks thanks to Uncanny Dodge (keeps the DC of the save low) and Evasion (avoid the damage entirely), though on the other hand, that means War Caster will make it even harder to lose concentration, plus it will help if you're facing a lot of weaker hits.
Might be a bit of a strange one, but you might consider Poisoner for the curse angle; maybe discuss with your DM how it might work thematically. For example, you might use the mechanics as presented, but thematically you're actually using your own blood to "curse" the weapon, and thus anyone harmed by it? Just an idea, but it could be a way to represent the curse that doesn't conflict on concentration?
Sentinel feat offers a great synergy with Mirror Image. It’s a little bit debatable, but if the enemy hits one of the images, this could trigger Sentinel reaction attack, probably with Sneak Attack extra damage.
Yeah thanks for the suggestions.Booming blade is already a signature move, so i thought an additional thing would be cool. I like Mobile, so will have to think what to do. War caster is def planned for the future, so that is on the list. While poisoner is cool, and the reflavouring might work, sticking with what i planned maybe best. WIll think these over though.
1. Both shadow touched and fey touched are mechanically awesome on an AT. They are honestly my favorite two feats in the game and more so on a partial caster. Aside from spells known they give you free casts which makes you more magical.
2. Both fit thematically - you are cursed by an evil shadow being or you are cursed by an evil dark fey
3. Looking at the feats -
A. For a Rogue invisibility is better than Misty Step most of the time because you can dash and disengage as a bonus action, but when you need misty step it is really good to have it (ex caught in a web). Invisibility is a lot more useful in general, you will have days where you do not misty step. Days where you do not use "free" invisibility will be rare.
B. Fey touched has a bunch of good 1st level options. I LOVE Hex on FT, but bless, silvery barbs, dissonant whispers are also all good if you really think you won't use hex. Some like Hunters Mark too, but unless you are using a shield Hex is a better spell than HM. I don't think Hex really conflicts with shadow blade for two reasons - first you won't have enough 2nd level slots to use SB every fight anyway, so your free cast of hex will always be useful. Second, in bright light Hex nearly matches SB in damage and lasts an hour, it is close enough I would consider it a "better buy" in bright light, even without the free cast. Hex also has good use out of combat.
I played a multiclass Bladesinger/Arcane Tickster and with Hex from Fey touched. She had a TON of spells and she used Hex more than any of them (well maybe not more than shield, but more than all the others). I added the thematic effect that her eyes went black when she cast Hex (her fey coming out- Witcher style). The DM even got into this "You see Tazziz's eyes roll black as she casts a spell you have seen her cast many, many times"
C. Shadow Touched is much more limited on 1st level options. Cause fear is probably the best combat spell, False life is probably second best. You also have disguise self and silent image, but these are spells you can easily get as an AT (and you probably have one of them). I would not go with cause fear on a Rogue unless I had at least a 16 intelligence (after the +1), but if you do it is a free cast and you can use 1st level slots for it. Cause fear is great on one enemy with no ranged attacks. You give up sneak to try it, but if it lands you kite in and booming blade him and he can't move any closer to you. It is also great at stopping enemies from following if you are fleeing and it upcasts really well for a 1st level spell. The downside is you are usually giving up a sneak attack to use it, so you need to be confident it will land.
The bladesonger/AT I mentioned above had both of these feats (with Hex and Cause Fear).
I also played a Glasya Tiefling AT that had Fey Touched and Hex along with the Fey Lost background. Her "pregame" time in Feywild was dark. She was a really fun character but the game petered out and I only went to level 5.
I played a goblin Fey Wanderer Ranger that had shadow touched with cause fear.
These three characters are the three most favorite characters I have played in 5E.
I def agree that shadow and fey touched are great feats. Both of them suit my character, all things considered. I like the idea of using hex when he cant use use shadow blade, explained as him using too much of his curses power to do either. So might take shadow touched and fey touched, both. I do have a 2 level dip into bladesinger planned, because my AC will be amazing, and i want to. Also I had completley forgotten cause fear existed. It could be reflavoured to something similar with my idea of hex, but it might be counter productive with my hit and run. Maybe change from hit and run to hit and they run? lmao. Might even make the bladesinger thing a 6 level dip or something like that, because xtra attack would be amazing.
Also, if you want to add more magic to your repertoire, the Ritual Caster (Wizard) feat can potentially greatly increase your spell selection and provide a lot of extra utility (although you'll have to tell your DM that you're looking for Wizard ritual scrolls to fill it out with).
I am currently playing an AT4/Wiz1 with Elven Accuracy also, I stole a Headband of Intellect so the half feats don't apply. I'm going Bladesinger to 6, looking ahead I was thinking of getting Sentinel for the extra sneak attack proc, but now I'm leaning towards Lucky for the flexibility of protecting all saving throws or rerolling the odd miss.

Yeah i dont think sentinel suits my character, but is definetly an option. I def have mirror image planned, since i am not the tankiest.

Sounds traumatic!
