I need your thoughts on if this character idea is stupid or not. I don't care that the build isn't optimal (I chose Inquisitive Rogue, after all), but I'd like to know if it's a bad/dumb/flawed combination or idea.
I'm been working on this character idea of a fairy cook who who becomes an adventurer because she is forced to go on the run after being accused of poisoning an important person she cooked for.
Vervain Efink Cornucopia
Fairy, rogue (Inquisitive) and maybecleric (Life Domain, Eachthighern) [ek-tee-arn]
BIO SUMMARY: Do you know how hard it is for fey to establish themselves in an elevated career on the Prime Material Plane? Once I wasa life cleric of Eachthighern andliving my dream working as the renowned, well-esteemed head chief of an important noble household, then I was framed for poisoning a visiting Duke and imprisoned for my so-called crime. Now, I’m a rogue on the run, trying to clear my name & determine who framed me & why.
Right from the beginning, I imagined Vervain wielding a frying pan either as a shield, a club, or both.
SHIELD: Rogues don't use shields but maybe a DM will agree to a homebrewed +1 to my AC instead of the normal +2 a shield provides without forcing a dexterity disadvantage on Vervain. Can a tiny flying fairy reasonably be expected to be able to properly use a shield? Aerodynamic problems?
CLUB: Can a tiny flying fairy reasonably be expected to wield a club of any kind, much less a solid metal, non-standard club? Aerodynamic problems? What if it was a mithral frying pan?
SPIRITUAL WEAPON: Vervain can wield a weightless club as a Spiritual Weapon if she is a Cleric minimum level 3. This idea removes the weight/aerodynamics problem but then requires Vervain to be multiclassed as cleric. Actually, technically, Vervain would have started out as a cleric, and then multiclassed into Rogue when she became an adventurer/fugitive. I've read that you shouldn't multiclass until level 5 but does the reasoning behind that matter when you multiclass only to gain access to a single, particular spell? Is this a really bad reason to multiclass? Is it stupid to plan a character's future to be multiclassed only up to level 3. Is a cleric who's level 3 forever a bad idea or a pointless complication to an adventuring party?
I've imagined Vervain as being a timid adventurer and nothing like the classic sticky-fingered rogue so her being a Life Cleric forced to become a Inquisitive Rogue to clear her name does make a certain kind of sense. I just don't know if my initial idea is flawed to begin with.
So from a damage standpoint you aren't great. Lets get that out of the way. But you aren't that bad. Standard two weapon rogue has two attacks standard and bonus) at 6th level doing 1d6+4 with an extra 3d6 sneak. Dex score should be an 18 at that level. Rogue 3 + Life Cleric 3 with spiritual weapon is doing 1d6+3+2d6 if it sneaks, and a bonus action1d8+3 (wis 16, dex 16). So you are basically -1d6 AND have a lower probability of hitting with a sneak since you only have one shot and a slightly lower dex via point buy. You buy back some of that damage if you enlarge (1d4 extra to each attack but it costs an action to activate). More usefully you buy back that damage by hitting more often with bless (and your party members hit more often). Bless is just great. I can't say enough great things about having a character who can cast bless at all levels. Between made saves, and you and your party hitting more often, a mostly rogue who can toss out bless is welcome just about anywhere they go. As a cleric you will have proficiency in shield. You can absolutely use a shield, but keep track of your hands for casting. So your rogue/cleric has +2 AC with the shield which is great. You can absolutely use one while flying as a fairy and can strap on studded leather. With an 16/17 dex at 3ro/3cl you have an AC of 17 which is the same as a rogue with 20 dex and studded. Nice work. Now since you have a shield you aren't going to be two weapon fighting anyway, so spiritual weapon is a great plan. I would recommend daggers for your on hand. You can throw them, and since you can fly you can move around combat without being in melee range. Your plan of wielding a club isn't going to work with sneak attack, because you need a dex based attack.
I am currently playing a 9th level Phantom with a level of Death Cleric, and having access to cantrips (guidance, etc) along with bless is great on a rogue. Your high wisdom feeds your awesome wisdom skills (perception/insight), and you add some support abilities to add options in combat. I like your fairy cleric rogue.
Proficiencies: Acrobatics, History, Perception, Stealth Expertise: Insight, Sleight of Hand
Proficiency Bonus +2 Initiative +3 AC 17
Since Vervain is Small and Flys, keeping weight to a minimum is vital, and I feel like she would need a magical item like Cloak of Daggers, Bracer of Flying Daggers, Bracer of Arcane Blades, or the Critical Role/Vox Machina Vaxildan's Blinkback Belt or Belt of Returning. What do you think? (Is that an item to tell my DM to put in my path somehow?)
FEATS: (Starting) Chef (later) Sharpshooter 3rd is...... Mobile? (frees up my Bonus Action for healing spells or Spiritual Weapon instead of Disengage) Warcaster? (to maintain Bless) Sentinel? Skulker? (helps with lack of Darkvision) Spell Sniper (Cleric, Druid)? Healer? (compensate for lack of healing spells above 2nd level) to be decided later based on the needs of my campaign and party????
By the way
Carrying Capacity is 40 lbs with these stats, or STR 8 DEX 16 CON 15 INT 12 WIS 16 CHA 7
Carrying Capacity is 30 lbs with stats STR 6 DEX 16 CON 15 INT 13 WIS 16 CHA 8
I have an INQ/Knowledge Cleric. The character is a religious inquistor / undead hunter modeled after a Sherlock Holmes type investigator. Ultimate skill monkey. V.Human, so I took skill expert at 1st level. At level 12, he has proficiency in 10 skills and expertise in 7 of them. I also have Knowledge of Ages for instant proficiency, as well as Eye for Deceit and Eye for Detail for boosts. Next ASI, I will stick with the theme and take skilled to get proficiency in three more.
