Hi, I'm working on making a character based on native american coyote from folklore, I thought arcane trickster would be perfect, but the backstory would fit really good with oath of vengeance.
I was thinking of multiclassing into bladesinger, I've never played a rogue before and wasn't sure if trying to take 3 lvls paladin, and 5 lvls bladesinger would take too much from the AT.
The biggest problem is that it is too MAD (multi ability score dependent). Just to qualify for those three classes means you must have at least a 13 in strength, dexterity, intelligence, and charisma. AT and bladesinger work together pretty well, but paladin requires a high strength you'll never use since sneak attack requires ranged or finesse weapon. It gives you armor proficiencies that aren't compatible with bladesong or stealth and it uses charisma for spells while AT and wizard use intelligence.
Thanks for pointing that out I appreciate your help, I'm still new to dnd and learning how it all works.
I'm trying to make a character based on native american coyote folklore so i thought arcane trickster but he has a magic talisman that gets stolen and he's searching for it thats why i was thinking oath of vengeance but wasn't sure
The dm ruled out bladesinger so im looking into bard possibly or a few levels of wizard but i don't want to focus so much on spells that the rogue aspect gets pushed to the side
You don't need an oath of vengeance to want to get revenge on someone that wronged you. That's just a quest you are on that doesn't require any mechanical abilities from a class. Bard uses Charisma for it's spells so doesn't pair as well with arcane trickster. In general I would recommend just staying arcane trickster single classed. Especially if you are new to D&D single classing is much simpler, and multi-classing can lead to pretty weak characters if you aren't careful. Arcane Trickster is already a mixture of rogue and wizard, so if you want to be mostly rogue with a few spells, that's the best way to go.
Sneak attack requires a finesse or ranged weapon. It doesn’t require you to use dexterity with a finesse weapon. You can use dexterity or strength as long as it’s a finesse weapon.
How does that work, attack with a rapier but use strength instead of dexterity?
Yes. Finesse says "When making an attack with a finesse weapon, you use your choice of your Strength or Dexterity modifier for the attack and damage rolls. You must use the same modifier for both rolls."
So while using strength for an attack with a rapier doesn't make much logical sense, it is allowed.
i could see using strength for a rapier... you just smacking your target on thier head super hard? Might qualify as bludgeoning damage at that point, haha.
Edit: id like to see more finesse weapons from officisl sources mind you.

Alright thanks I believe thats what I'll do I'm definitely looking forward to trying an arcane trickster,it sounds like an interesting class

Right on, thanks for telling me, it does seem like something that would be for more of an rp line of thought
