Yes, it's better unless you find magic armor (+1 etc). At that point you could swap it out of course. The drawback is indeed that you would need to spend one of your few spells on it. And keep it mind it lasts for 8 hours not 24. I've been in situations were I needed to cast it twice a day as my wizard. An Arcane trickster way more limited slots than a wizard so it might be a good idea to pack a light armor just in case.
I'll definitely take Find Familiar 1st, although Ritual Caster: Wizard is a very tempting feat for a 4th lvl Arcane Trickster. Then you get access to *every* Ritual magic spell...
Find Familiar on the other hand sacrifices 1 point of AC and 2 slots a day for.
Help Action and an Owl Familiar. The Owl has 120' of Darkvision, training in Perception (Keen Hearing & Sight) and Stealth, and Flyby.
With the telepathic bond my owl familiar is always giving my the Help Action for Perception as we are looking around. I can see through its eyes and spy on someone up to 100' away with it's +3 Stealth and it has enhanced senses. Plus it has Flyby so it doesn't provoke AoOs in combat and so I almost always have Adv in combat every single turn. I'm only up to my 3rd Owl Familiar due to AoE attacks and it's 1HP.

Just something I noticed when refreshing how mage armour works for an NPC.
Mage armour has an AC of 13 +dex.
Studded Leather has a AC of 12+dex.
So for an arcane trickster wouldn't mage armour be a superior option to light armour?
I know it's a spell tax but still better AC is nothing to scoff at.
What's the drawback?
