Someone replied to another of my posts saying that, if I have 30 feet of movement, I can take that 30, attack, then use my cunning action to dash an additional 30 feet.
I'm not sure if and Dashingwhere it states this specifically in the PHB, but dashinh is typically twice your movement. So wouldn't that mean I'd get my 30 regular movement and an additional 60 feet of dashing?
Also, can I cunningly dash before, rather than after attacking?
The Dash action does not double your movement. It gives you additional movement. See the rule here:
When you take the Dash action, you gain extra movement for the current turn. The increase equals your speed, after applying any modifiers. With a speed of 30 feet, for example, you can move up to 60 feet on your turn if you dash.
Any increase or decrease to your speed changes this additional movement by the same amount. If your speed of 30 feet is reduced to 15 feet, for instance, you can move up to 30 feet this turn if you dash.
The other poster was correct. If you have 30 feet of speed as a Rogue, you can move (30 feet), dash as a bonus action (30 feet) AND dash as an action (30 feet) for a total of 90 feet of movement.
For your other question: Yes. Cunning Action does not require you to use it at a certain point on your turn.
- You can take your 30 feet of movement, attack, then use cunning action to dash. - Or you could take 15 feet of movement, attack, use 15 more feet of movement and use cunning action to dash - Or even move 30 feet and use cunning action to dash 10 feet and then attack, and the move the remaining 20 feet of your dash.
You can break up your movement however you choose on your turn.
Something which can cause confusion is the difference between movement and speed. Dash increases your movement but not your speed.
This is relevant in situations like being knocked prone. Standing up requires half your speed. So if you have a speed of 30 and stand up from prone you have 15 of movement if you do not dash and 45 feet if you do dash (not 30).
